If you have good eyes you'll see the body tag was installed on this Dandenong car prior to paint. Prior to everything actually.  I guess they're supposed to be painted for Dandenong cars? Wayne Edited by user Saturday, 12 November 2016 12:39:16 PM(UTC)

Yes, normally those up on the cowl are bent as they are attached with one rivet and bent up so that paint/dip gets under, then they are bent down after paint and the other rivet applied. |

Thanks thats another detail to add to the list.
So the VIN tag went on later after paint.
I wonder why they were so keen to have the body tag on early.

Might have been a difference in the process compared to other plants, requiring it for ID at the paint shop or other sections of the line if the broadcast wasn't handy.
They continued this practice into VB, VC & early VH Commodores too. It wasn't until they moved the tags (the first time) in VH, at the start of '82 that they stopped painting them. |

Because that is how they tracked the body, the body number on these was the schedule number IIRC. Other body plants did it differently. Acacia Ridge attached the body tag prior to paint as well, and later the VIN tag too. Make sure you have a close look at original Dandenong bodied HK's with the body tag up on the cowl before you do yours. Most of the Dandenong tags I've seen as I described have been HQ-HZ and LH-LX. I don't find all that many Dandenong HK's up here. You may want to check if they actually masked the body tag. I know when HK body tag was on the firewall they used to mask it for red lead and the black - I saw one at a wreckers out in the middle of Victoria where the mask had fallen off for the red lead but they'd put it back on for the black, so the tag was all red lead. Edit - I just found some of those old photos from that wreckers, and it looks like in HK the body tag on the cowl was on as bare metal but masked like the body tags on the firewall. Thanks Byron, masking would explain the lack of black paint on my tag while having no black paint under the tag. Theres actually a small amount of black and even some blue on the edges so yep I think this one was masked. I've found several photos of very original HG body tags painted over.
