Hi, I am looking at buying a HG auto sedan that I want to change to manual. The car is a 6 cylinder and will remain as such. I was thinking of maybe an M20? I know that these have an issue with the shifter hole being where the strengthening rib is but have heard that the shifter can be moved forward to miss this? Another alternative was a synchro 3 speed with a Speco shifter, possibly these miss the rib? Is there any issues with putting in a clutch master cylinder, is there a preset position on the fire wall like the HR's?
Any advice on problems would be greatly appreciated, as I would like to give all this a go myself.
Thanks, Peter

I'm pretty sure there will be a press spot to put the clutch master, you would just have to drill it out.

As for the gearbox I would recommend bringing the shifter backwards, but if you've got a bench seat this probably wouldn't work. I've done it with buckets and the shifter falls beautifully to hand. My suggested method would be mount the shifter to the floor behind the strengthening ribs (you may need to fabricate a flat section on top of the tunnel like a floorshift manual car had) and then cut, bend and weld in additional pieces to lengthen all 3 linkage rods so they don't foul the ribs.

I think the problem if you brought the shifter forward would be 2 fold, you'd have to stretch to reach it and the shifter would be sitting right on top of the reverse arm (no room for the rod)

Get a Muncie or Saginaw or T10 and make it as per original. You don't absolutely need to put in the floor hump if you fabricate the linkages correctly, but you need the shifter add-on piece.

A HG M20 will fit, but finding an Opel box will be hard and a backwards step.

I bought a clutch master cylinder from Dellow automotive in Sydney.Bolt holes line up perfectly with holes on firewall. If you look under dash at firewall where pedal box mounts to firewall you should see where a hole can be cut through mount for clutch cylinder to sit(will line up where a clutch pedal will be fitted). If you remove pedal box and mount it to say a fence post, bolt the clutch cylinder in position then fit push rod and line up to your new clutch pedal to get rod perfectly square.
