I pressure cleaned my rear springs and noticed a part number on the lower leaf. The part number ends in 998 and has DAN? under it. DAN for Dandenong maybe? One thing I didnt find was any traces of black paint. Were the rear springs bare metal from the factory? My front springs certainly were.  Heres another very low mile car with a part number on the springs and again no black paint.

Interesting. Lots of bare bits on your car!
The 998 is the last three digits of the part number for that particular spring, 7449998. Given the age of your car, you should see that number in box 108 on the production broadcast sheet, which I believe you have. Later on this was changed to a two letter code.

Yep 998 is on the broadcast. Now I just have to decide if I want to have rusty springs under a shiny car.

Wayne, I discussed that one with Ben this morning. He reckons the entire rear assembly was built separately to the car, and got a light coat of black before installation. Time, spring flex, a good wash and some gravel rash probably remove the paint.
The same comment is probably valid for the front springs, where the bit you see gets a light coat of paint, but the bit inside the shock tower does not.
That seems to tally with what I've seen.

Thats good, I'd rather not have bare metal springs on it. That would explain the black paint on the lower coils of the front springs.  Thanks mate Wayne
