Guys
Looking for some guidance on front shocks over the Series.
I have a pair of old 1970's GT-130 rears for s HK-HG which I will get rebuilt to GTS327 specs.
Picked up some fronts today which are in the 1980 Monroe Wiley Catalogue GT-4095. Listed for all HQ-HZ and all LH-LX. FB-HG except GTS327/350 are GT-4096, and GTS327/350 HK-HG is GT-4086.
What is different physically between HQ-HZ/LH-LX and FB-HG? If the HQ-HZ ones will work in HK-HG i'll get those rebuilt to GTS327 specs.
Over the years (I have catalogues for the 60's and 70's) the numbers have changed, and they have condensed down to the few different numbers above by 1980.
If I can't use the HQ-HZ ones, i'm looking for a pair of old GT-130's with the following numbers if anyone has some old ones on the shelf:
GT-4022 GT-4020 GT-4086 GT-4089
Any of these will do, i'll get them rebuilt to HK GTS327 valving. |

Hi, if the front shocks fit all those models , the only variations I can recall are bottom shock mounts with holes and some with slots ? also larger diameter ( more oil inside I suppose ? ) I can remember having to grind out control arms to fit these larger diameter shocks into something Holden ?? Hope this Helps a bit ....Mark. |

Thanks Mark. 1980 catalogue does show for stuff earlier than HZ that 4095 needs enlarging of the hole to fit the shocks. The only thing I can think of is maybe the shock's overall lengths compressed and extended. I'll get onto Monroe and see what is different for the modern gas version. I just checked the current catalogue. Monroe list the same rear shocks for HK-WB, but they still list a different front shock for FB-HG and HQ-WB. There is a note against the FB-HG shock 15-3146, says: Measure between centres of lower mounting studs - If 58mm use 15-3146 - If 64mm use 15-0176.. The HQ-WB shock 15-3095 has no such notes. For Monaroe to still keep different front shocks for FB-HG and HQ-WB there must be a fundamental difference. Edit - just found it I think. FB-HG appears to be 354mm extended and 223mm compressed. HQ-WB is 336mm extended and 216mm compressed. So it looks like i'm on the hunt for a pair of any of these as previously listed: GT-4022 GT-4020 GT-4086 GT-4089 Edited by user Sunday, 14 May 2017 9:28:49 AM(UTC)

I've got a set of shocks that came out of a HK Brougham front end with the part number 2806490 which doesn't appear in HK or HG parts catalogue. when I googled the part number i came across an old post from Holden general discussion from 9 years ago and the same shocks were in a HK Monaro, doesn't say V8 or 6. post was HK(tg)Monaro shock absorber query and the result was the number is for housing only not complete assembly.don't know if these are close to what you are after but the markings go like this. front GM 2806490 ZFJOL10-OY40 28E4 28 may 1974 is a bit late but the ones in the other post are from 1968 with same part nos. back ^top MONROE top^ MNFD UNDER LICENSE BY W H WYLIE & CO PTY LTD SOUTH AUSTRALIA pat. nos. 20179. 121929 121928 and other pats. tried measuring extended and closed but came up with totally different numbers than you wrote. where do you measure from. I measured from centre of top rubbers to mounting plate at bottom. measurements are closed 295mm, extended 383. both shocks have same date nos.

They may do for what I want. I was trying for the Wylie GT-130 as they have a bigger bore. Will PM you, just have to check what these are from. |

I got a exchange lower control arm from Pedders about ten years ago. When I fitted it (WB ute) the hole in the bottom was too small to fit the shock. There must have been more than one shock for HQ to WB.

Larger hole is HZ-WB. There were different HQ to HZ shocks, and also different Torana, and different FB to HG. But Monroe rationalised them into a few types. Edited by user Sunday, 14 May 2017 6:50:39 PM(UTC)

WW in Brisbane can do those. Chasing people in Vic for the GT-130's. |

These arent the number you're looking for but were GT130's painted metallic gold in the 80's? My neighbour worked at Monroes in the 70's and he reckons these are GT130's but I dont know. Removed from my HK327 Front part# 146 (Date April 1986) Rear part# 052 (Date April 1986)

Those aren't 1970's GT-130, they are probably a later incarnation of them though. The 052 part number aligns with the old GT-130 number GT-4052 which is the rear for all FJ-HG except GTS327/350. Can't make any sense out of the 146 number though, but the highest GT-130 number in my 1980 book is GT-4131 so Monaro could have easily rationalised further and created GT-4146 in the 80's. They may even be GT-130 gas if they have self opened to full length. Here is an image of a traditional later 1970's GT130 type shock: http://www.ebay.com.au/i...d274:g:3EMAAOxyVLNSrDKS

The old original Monro Wylie GT 130 shocks were better than the Monro GT 130's, as they had the twisting bore look and were valved different to the Monro GT 130.

They are the same thing up to a point, then they dropped the oil shock and made them a 1" piston gas shock if my info is correct. The old oil shocks are a bigger bore and last longer, but if they have any corrosion in the cap they are not rebuildable as the caps are no longer available. The original GMH Delco shocks for Holdens were all built internally by GMH except Wylie did the HK GTS327 shocks for GMH (the spiral bottom type), they are branded GMH but Wylie did them. |

I remember they still were oil but no spiral and valving was not as good and quality was not as good, the gas type did come out as well, but I don't think they were as good as the old spiral Wylie.
I remember being pissed off about the new type GT130 when the old ones were better, just that the bottom rubber O ring had flogged out on one of the GT 130 Wylie, so I changed them. The gas ones were no better than the oil, in fact they felt were softer than the oil, back in around 1985 I think it was.

Byron I Have a pair of front GT130 new in Yellow/black/white GMH boxes which have GMH part numbers on them. I thought it was a mixup. Were they available as GMH parts? I will get them out in the next few days and send you pics. Hope it helps. Nick Edited by user Sunday, 18 June 2017 10:57:01 AM(UTC)

Hello Byron and all. I finally went to the shed and found the shox in box...Pardon the pun. So Byron, I think these are the ones you are referring to as just being thrown into boxes. When I bought them I thought someone had bought some GMH ones and possibly did a switcheroo, returning them to a dealer for refund. Mind you back in the day people would buy something aftermarket as it was known that factory suspension was pretty basic. Here are some pics: Sorry, I could note rotate them on Tinypic.
