After having the motor rebuilt with mild camshaft, the idle speed and engine vacuum on the 350 Holley aren't as constant as they should be.I've done the general checks like ignition timing, looked for vacuum leaks, tappets, air cleaner. They're all fine.Above idle it runs fine. Can an incorrect power valve(8.5) cause a poor idle?Played around with accelerator pump circuit(cams, nozzles, pump arm clearance) but no improvement.Look forward to your advice.

I would suggest that the camshaft is a bit bigger than "mild". Do you have the cam card with its specs ?

Dr Terry
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

Auto or manual? Auto cars can struggle at idle with a manual carb vacuum port.

Has the dizzy got vacuum so she advances at idle on that vacuum, I have found that that can help it idle smoother.

This is what I meant, autos need full vacuum at idle, manuals tend to use ported vacuum.

I don't have cam specs in front of me but I know it's about 25/65 no bigger. The car is manual, the dizzy has been overhauled and recurved and vacuum advance is working fine. The idle doesn't have that typical lumpiness sound that you get from a bigger cam, it's more like what you get from running a rich mixture.

And the the float level is correct.A non mechanically minded person wouldn't notice it but as I'd rather listen to my motor than a car radio,I can hear the difference. It always starts well so I shouldn't be too disappointed.

did you clean the old sticky oil deposits from the pcv. only say that as it seems to be a mild roll at idle.

A mate back in 1980 had a Torana G Pack with a 202 with a 30/70 cam and then a 35/75 cam with twin exhaust chevy style poking down to the ground behind the back wheels, when we dropped off a mate in it late at night his mum an dad did not like that thumpty thump thump noise at idle, they could not understand why it made that noise but hated it, so he had to drop old mate off down the driveway about 40m away, but old sunny boy had a 40/80 cam in his 186 LH SLR Torana but his twin pipes went straight out the back and parked it in one of the 12 sheds down the other side of the house.

I have always loved that big cam noise and to be woken up by it is a pleasure to me, even a good sounding V8 going past flat to the boards makes me sit up and smile and can nod back off to sleep no problems, I would be like, now that sounded like a Cleveland, or a Holden, Chev, Valiant, that would be of the only interest to me. it's like music to me.

When I was a kid I lived on top of a hill near the highway and could hear V8 cars going past flat out at night and one old 2 stroke truck that sounded good to hear and a mate lived right next to the highway and he would jump out of bed and run to the window when he heard a V8 coming flat out going past, just to see it, the lucky bugger.
