Nice sunny day so took the HG for a spin. A couple times over the last 2 years it has had what sounds like a intermittent lightly noisy lifter, nothing to bad. Today I was only a couple kays into the drive when the "lifter" started to tick lightly but then developed into a noisy clack, clack, clack. It was that noisy I thought it was a stuffed conrod bearing at 1st. Pulled over with it idling and the clacking and ticking went away after a few seconds. Turned towards home, it purred as normal until my driveway, then the clacking returned. The HG has 92,000 miles, heads never off, serviced religiously.
Had a lot of them over the years and never come across it before with any of my Holden V8's.
My questions are..
Is this a known problem with the 253?
Would it be a worn lifter?
Cam lobe wear?
Or something worse?
Any advice appreciated

Cam lobe wear is common in 253 and 308 if they do a lot of cold running around town. I pulled a 253 down out of a Bedford and three lobes were gone.

Is it missing on any cylinders? If the noise goes away you would think it was more likely a lifter though. Either way, new cam needs new lifters. Good excuse to put a bigger cam in it. Edited by user Sunday, 4 June 2017 6:20:23 PM(UTC)

Thanks WB Not missing, usually runs smooth and quiet, power is still fine. Then the noisy clacking in sync with revs. Just started it up again, seems to be coming from the drivers side rear top end. |

pull the drivers side rocker cover off and check for any cracked/broken rocker saddles. if nothing obvious start her up and idle and check for even oiling over all rockers. you might just have some gunk buildup in the oil system especially if the car doesn't go out often.
