Hi all
I have just picked up a hg gts body shell. Its a 808 but how can I tell if it was manual or auto? all it has is the floor shift insert welded in place at the factory.. is there any difference on the firewall or anywhere else on the body that can tell me?

there is no hump on the passenger floor footwell but it does have a manual brake pedal in it which as we know could have been swapped 5 x times over the years.

any help appreciated

If it was a 308 manual it will have radius rod support bracket holes in the front of the rear wheel house.
If it was 253 manual it may or may not have them.
Does it have a clearance hump in the rear edge of the floor pan at the front of the tank?

Speedo cable. Manual will be as per any V8 HK with the speedo cable hole closer to the centre of the firewall. Auto will be as per 6cyl auto with the Trimatic speedo cable hole over towards the driver's side.

If it doesn't have a Saginaw linkage hump it will be an auto.

If it doesn't have a Salisbury hump it will be a 253.

All assuming the tags are original to the body which is no given these days.

If you are getting really technical too, on a HG coupe the insert for the shifter is not for a floor shifter, it is for console shift. No biggie, just GMH use the terms column shift, floor shift and console shift.

Auto will have kick down bracket near brake booster.
Auto will not have two green wires in harness that goes to the centre of firewall, on the right as you look at the harness from the front of the car.
Auto will have neutral safety switch wiring.
Auto will have console wiring for light.

If you ordered a 4-sp Belmont Ute or van in HG, didn't you get bucket seats & a Saginaw with no console ? This would be defined as a floor shift, not a console shift & it would've had the weld-in patch for the Saginaw shifter.

Also was the old Opel long stick (no console) floor shift available for HG ?

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

I said HG coupe, and that I was being really technical. Yes on a HG V8 M21 ute or van you got a floor shift, just like you did with a HQ commercial with M20, M21 or later M22 (pre Sandman). In HG passenger optioning M21 meant mandatory A50 or XS6 buckets and console shift.
