either I've turned into a proper fat ba$&@"d or there's something I don't know about HJ-HZ seats.
I'm struggling to get into my HX van. Head hits the door opening, legs jam under the wheel and I seem to be generally sitting too high.
I've been storing a really nice pair of black seats for this car and after running a tape over them they seem to be even taller.
I thought all the seats were the same. Am I wrong or do I need to diet?

you can't lay back your seats in a van. You've gotta get in the back for that. set it upright and push it back.

Are they Premier or Statesman seats? They have a bit more padding on them and are worse than lower spec with clearance.
I'm 6'5" and I have never been able to easily get into a manual HJ-HZ, I have trouble with foot room and with legs under the steering wheel. Autos I can get my foot in under the brake pedal and slide legs under the wheel but manuals I have to put my foot on the clutch first. If the steering wheel happens to not be straight ahead it is even harder. I used to always put power steer on and use a smaller diameter steering wheel. Vans are a bit better as you can fit aftermarket seats and slide them back further, but utes and tonners you can't. |

I'm not sure what they're out of Just measured the ones in the car and they're about 200mm off the floor to the front seam. Measured the 2 other pairs I have and they're 240mm from the floor to the same seam so they will more likely make the problem worse I just climbed in it again and I'd swear the seat needs to be 60-80mm lower Edited by user Sunday, 4 March 2018 7:56:16 PM(UTC)

Mate I hear you..........Measure all you like its called maturity. back in the day the things I got up to on a bench seat was scary.  i am 6'2 atm (still)and hate driving them now...I used to just pop into them and not even think about it...Now I have to think about it first...Bloody age mate. Put my ass in first then drag the legs in last...I feel like a prima dona in high heals..  One of my Daughters have a Territory, I more or less walk into it. I just climbed in it again and I'd swear the seat needs to be 60-80mm lower I tried to find pictures, best I can do at the moment is the bottom seats in the attached link are lower spec HJ-HZ, next ones up are Premier or Deville. You can see Deville seats in the second link. I think the Premier/LS/Deville seats have more padding under the inserts, they always seem to be harder to get into for me. My HJ Premier is a b!tch to get into properly with its standard wheel, but I never had as much problem with utes and vans. As I said I put my left foot in first, slide it under the brake pedal and then slide across under the wheel. Doesn't work with a manual as my size 12 foot ends up under the clutch pedal, have to put my left foot on the clutch, press the clutch fully in first and then slide in. Note that some rebuilt seats they add new foam (again see top link), and seats may be thicker or at least compress less than original. https://cgautoupholstery...ain_page=page&id=16

Thanks Byron. I think times have changed as I don't remember as a 20 something ever having trouble. As Griffo says you can pretty much walk into late model cars so I've probably been spoilt over the years.
There is an upside though. Because the seats are so big they're also very comfy. It's like sitting in your favourite lounge chair

It's like sitting in your favourite lounge chair Gee I don't know about that, the wife's Aurion may have big doors but I find the passenger side a bit of a pain, don't know why the passenger side has to be so high in most cars. I have never found getting into Holden HQ to WB a problem but I do drive all cars with bear feet, never shoes or boots. Them AU Falcons and on were a bastard hitting your head getting in and out not to mention i could not sit in the rear as they had no head room. The AU Falcon on front seats never went low enough and I am sure the designers were all short arse.

I struggle to get in my WB. It has a Stratos drivers seat which makes it worse. They are so low too, compared to the Hilux I drive everyday too though.

Try a Hilux with a Recaro Ergomed! Once I figured out how to get in and out all good but not easy. |

50mm lift plus whatever 265/65/17 add over the 255/70/15 tyres. SR5 side steps removed. Recaro Ergomed on ARB base. Left boot in, right hand gripping the roof with fingers in the roof rail. Lift up with right arm, and swing in so left elbow goes onto console lid, drop into Recaro. Only way to do it without getting an arse flossing by the seat wing!
