Does the z30 oil filter fit all 253s or do the early hq engines have a different one?

I'm pretty sure Z30 is the go, or you can use the shorter Z160 off the later 1980's engines but they should be identical at the filer mount.

I wonder if its a pump issue as surely you don't still have the original HQ oil pump? I guess a Survivor might though as my 1974 HJ still has its original! It takes a Z30.

If you bought a RYCO filter then contact them for advice. If it is a filter issue then they will respond and resolve. However if it is some other brand then contact the supplier. When you have an issue with a product these days then go back to the source.
If it is a mechanical issue then sometimes they may be able to assist with advice.

If it's pissing oil you might not have removed the old seal from the block. check the old filter and see if it still has the rubber seal on it.

I bought some Repco branded ones years ago in a pack of 6 I think. I went through three before I gave up. They all blew the seal on start up after changing the oil. I went back to Ryco and never had an issue. Repco just said I must be doing something wrong.

I’ve currently got a Ryco z30 on my hj 5 litre original oil pump
It’s leaking around where the filter body joins the threaded boss end not from the rubber seal
Noticed the leak first drive after installing it
I’ve used Ryco for ever I do remember having one many years ago which wouldn’t seal

They blew the seal ? must be a fault with the valve is blocked ? but that should not bother it as oil should bypass the filter even if it were blocked.

The seal, it would be interesting to see, must be crappy rubber, did it burst out, rubber must of been to hard or to soft ? or imperfection in the rubber seal.

I seen on u tube a new engine on initial start up blow two filters directly.

A mechanic mate had one fall off his XP 170 back in 1984 and asked me why or had I ever heard of such, the rubber must of been real hard ? or someone played a c--t act on him.

Yeah it just pushed out between the seal and the housing. They were done up correctly and all three I tried did it. The Ryco ones never caused an issue. It must have been a manufacturing fault. Luckily I heard this strange squelching noise, which was the oil pumping out. It would scare you how quickly that little oil pump will empty,or dam nearly, empty a sump through that seal.

Back when life was simple, Ford used Z9, Holden used Z30. My old 2.8 Hilux used Z9, the Perkins in my old D1830 uses Z9 and my old Toyota forklift uses a Z9.

Pretty sure my 743B uses a Z9 too, although I normally buy Clark stuff which uses part numbers.

The sad part about RYCO is they stopped manufacturing here in Australia some years ago but recently spent a lot of money upgrading their test and research department here. They use many overseas suppliers, that also supply the car companies, to ensure their products are 100% checked before despatch and then randomly checked here. Any issue would see it resolved before the stock got to market. GUB/RYCO is also tied in with WESTFIL Filters, NARVA lighting and GOSS.
As the major filter supplier to the Aftermarket industry they will respond to any customer complaint or quality issue.
It is worth visiting the web site and if you still have any concerns contact them.

I could say something about manufacturers not making stuff here, but I won’t.
I have never had an issue with Ryco. It was Repco filters that were no good.

I have used hundreds of ryco filters on holdenv8's and have never had a problem.

The engine is reconditioned, ive just put it in one of my HG pano's

Cant have been many '74 HJ's built, nice one

HK and DR Terry can probably correct me, but the stuff I have read on the 308/253 development, the oil pump was a strong consideration. It needed to be external it had to suit a couple of different engine bays. I don’t think it changed at all from initial development right up till the end?

Huge amounts of 1974 HJ. Volume production started in September 1974. The pilots were built back around May. Mine was complianced 12/74 but not completed until 2/75.

Fred James talks about it, will check. I think it was done how it was due to the centre sump hump in the HK. One of the argument to GM to develop the GMH V8 was none of the other GM V8 engines would fit the HD-HR-HK-HT-HQ engine bay. They considered Pontiac, Buick and Chevrolet engines but forged on with their own. But miraculously the 283 suddenly fitted (base SBC V8 was 307 by HK production). There was no reason why GMH couldn’t have built a SBC engine here which probably could have happened if it’d been known 5 years before HK that it fit so easily. GM built 250 6cyl in South Africa and we ended up building GM V6 here for years.
The pump does change a bit sometime after WB I think - the pressure sender moves a bit.
