Warren will probably know exactly, but it looks as simple as the first character is the Zone Office designation, and the 5 digit number being the dealer's order number.

Not sure how the first number works, but the last part is very simple.

Each dealer is given an invoice/order book which is pre numbered sequentially, this is that number.

Thanks Warren,
OK so if you have an order # and a big enough database you can workout the ordering dealer.
cheers

That HK order # / Production Broadcast sheet (1968) does not have DLR (Code)on it. I am not sure when "Code" first appeared on a Production Broadcast sheet.
My earliest Production Broadcast sheet with a code is 6/9/1972.
My latest Production Broadcast sheet without a code is 16/12/1968.
Dealer codes were first issued by GMH in 1962 as warranty / financial claims reference number per dealer. I believe based on the GM - Pontiac system.

Thanks Warren,
It would be interesting to track the evolution of the production Broadcast Sheet.
Not even sure when they were first used or in what form on the production line.

May have something to do with the proliferation of options in the late 60's. And higher levels of computer generated info.

Cheers

Prefix for the plant where the vehicle was to be completed I guess.
M = Ordered for Melbourne
P = Ordered for Perth (with an Adelaide body in your example)
A - Ordered for Adelaide
S = Ordered for Sydney

Looks like sometime in 1972 the prefix changed from a letter to a number signifying I dont know what.
Maybe it just gave them more numbers to play with.

As Warren mentioned, there is no order to the 5 digit order numbers.
The next car ordered through Market Motors Dandenong after my car 00052 would have been 00053, if they used the same order book.

M 00052 Nov.1968 HK - Ordered by Market Motors Dandenong
M 14162 Nov.1968 HK - Ordered by someone else

Heres another one for ya

The broadcast sheet was introduced late in 1968, the Modern Motor 307 4 speed Premier was built on the old system of stickers on the window, see magazine article of build process.

You are right about the reason, it was ti reduce errors on the production line due to the endless possibilities.

I have sheets from 1968 to late VN in the A4 format, and have recorded the evolution. (I have been fortunate that many have sent me copies of sheets and some guys have sent me bundles of late model sheets)

Just to clarify a couple of details here.
- Sid and *WILLIAM* Wyres were the Wyres Bros.
- Sam is Sid's son.
- John took over William's share of the business when William passed away.
- Sam took over Sid's share of the business when Sid passed away.
- Closing date was 14/05/1980, not 01/05/1980
- Not sure of the day/month of opening, but 1947 is correct.
- Open with the Rootes franchise in 1947 (Hillman, etc)
- Got Vauxhall *and* Bedford in 1957/1958 - (there's some conjecture on the exact time)
- Got Holden, Chevrolet, Pontiac, etc in about 1963 - (there were briefly THREE Holden dealers in Ballarat - Wyres Bros got a franchise while M G Taylor were being stripped of theirs).
- Also had BMW right near the end - and in fact the last car they ever sold was a BMW 635 to John Trevenen himself.
