First/reverse lockout - saginaw gearbox

The first/reverse lockout on my car doesn’t work. Two questions: 1. Can these be fixed i.e. is there a spring in it that can be replaced? 2. If it is not able to be fixed, where do I buy one the same? Photo attached. Thanks, Gerard

Hi Gerard You are taking me back to a dark place with that question... I will save you a lot of googling and trips to 'old school transmissions shops' and tell you it is called a reverse detent button/ball. Good luck with finding one as I tried a fair few places without success. In this link: https://www.mustangtech....ight=detent.html#116602 I provide an overview of how the thing works and what I did to fix it. In my case the actual cylinder was stuffed through wear and tear. I had to really slap it into reverse which never felt good. Let me know if you have any more luck than I did finding somewhere that sells the whole detent unit. cheers Jacko

Rare Spares has the SAGINAW shifter as a complete item. These are sold complete as they are assembled overseas. If you look up part number 3922514, or visit a store it might help you resolve the issue. Edited by user Monday, 21 May 2018 11:42:36 AM(UTC)

There are types, the one Jack has shown is the later one, which is not like yours. The one you have has spring steel ring/coil around the balls and when it breaks they are a bugger to find spring steel to replace, or if you loose all the balls even worse. Thanks for the replies on this post. Doesn’t look like locating this part as a seperate item is likely. Looks like I will pull the shifter out and see if the lockout/detent can be improved in some way. If the shifter can work alright without it until this is sorted out it there won’t be much difference as the problem in the car is that it is not hard to select reverse gear but the opposite, there is not much resistance toward the reverse gear position.

I had the problem of failed reverse detent on my HK saginaw shifter back around 1980. At that time, Holden made a shifter repair kit which included a few small parts to correct this issue. The spring on mine had broken and fitting the kit stopped me from wandering too far to the left on downshifts (entering reverse gate unintentionally). Even in 1980, that kit was already listed by Holden as "NLA" (no longer available). It was lucky for me the local dealer knew of the kit and tracked one down from a neighbouring dealer. Sorry I don't remember the part number of the kit, but I guess there would be zero chance of finding one nowadays anyway. From memory, the spring looked like a piece of flat spring steel that had been wound into a ring shape.
I suppose the Rare Spares reproduction shifter is probably your best way forward now. I have been following your posts and the quality of your work is impressive. I can see you are really enjoying the project.

HK37Dulon If this part was hard to get in 1980 it seems that finding one today is hardly likely, but I would like to keep the original shifter in the car rather than fitting another unit. In saying that, searching for this part on the net hasn’t found me one yet. I thought that locating one in the US would have been fairly easy but as Ausjacko’s comments confirm this isn’t the case. I think the unit shown in his reply looks a better one than the one I have and wonder if they are interchangeable or shifter specific? Thanks for your comments about the work done on the car. Restoring this car took about four years and is good to have it on the road again. It was made easier with the car being mostly complete and original in most areas. During the restoration I wished I had taken the time to store some of the parts that I removed from the car when I did the usual changes that everyone did at that time ( between 1975 and 1978) but then they were pretty well just everyday cars. Got a lot of information from this forum on the HK to HG Monaro which really helps when you are trying to get things back to how they should be, especially when it is in areas that are unfamiliar to you. Also picked up a lot of general information on the production of these cars.

HI Gerard I used the Rare Spares unit as it was my only option- other than never selecting reverse.

I have the earlier type shifter and the detent outer spring was also broken, its common I think. I was lucky enough to find an old shifter on Gumtree for $50, it was in bits but I could see it had a good detent assembly and the plastic cap. Probably easier finding unicorn sh!t so you gotta be arsey sometimes.
