HI all. A friend of mine passed away recently. He had a Coaster Bus he started 'doing up' but it didn't happen. It was repowered with a 186 adapted to the original Coaster box by the look of it, before he got it. The bus has been sold and the new owner doesn't want the 186. I haven't had anything to do with these buses so what is the easiest way to get the motor out? Up through the inside or out from underneath? It is in a paddock so no workshop or shed to work in. I had a look in the dark last night using a torch with a near flat battery. The adaptor plate is about 30mm thick. I felt for the 186 in the casting on the side of the block. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated? I drive a semi with a truck mounted hiab that will lift 1.5t in the middle of the trailer. No holes in the roof though...... TIA Ron |

From memory it is out through the cabin. A Dyna has a cabin that tilts, but the Daihatsu version (Delta, basically the same thing) the engine comes out through the cabin. I think a Coaster is the same as a Delta. I pulled a B engine out of a Delta and replaced with a 3B, but these were only 4cyl and it was tight, Used an engine crane through the passenger door. Not sure how you are going to get a 6cyl out though, won't be easy. 186's are not worth much unless it is an XU1 or a 186S engine, might be best just to leave it there? |

Thanks HK1837. I said I would take it ($50)) as it has an EH sump on it so that is worth the effort of getting it out. I will take the adaptor plate too and any ancillary parts to do the same swap in another one as they would be saleable. A 186 would have to be better than the original motor any day as I have to follow over loaded camper vans out on the highway and most won't pull the skin off a rice pudding! Except when you get to a long straight or passing lanes....... |

A lot of those old Dynas and Deltas were converted to Holden 6 but they don't have enough torque. My Daihatsu Delta V90 was a 1983 originally with a B diesel (3.0L). I got hold of a really low kM BJ40 Landcruiser that was very rusty and got a 3B (3.4L) out of it to go in the Delta. It drove well empty but with 2.5tonne on the back it was pretty slow, a 186 would barely have been able to move it. Probably has less than half the torque of a 3B at low rpm.
From what I Googled most people drop the engines from underneath in the Coasters though, but I doubt that option is available to you. You might have to pull the 186 apart to get it out. |

I could lift the bus up with the hiab to work underneath it after making it safe and secure but then I wouldn't have anything to lift it out with. I may have to remove some of the floor. It has a plywood trap door over the engine that is shorter that the length of the 186. Some one sat a beer fridge over the trap door and without beer it was easy to move out of the way. The pivot points of the hiab may be too high to use it inside through the side door which is about where the back of the gearbox is. The crane is long enough to reach to about a metre from the rear of a 45 foot trailer so it may just have enough clearance at that length from the main pivot? It is around 3 metres at that point. The truck will just fit under 3.5m clearance as it has a short stack.

I started removing some of the parts on the bus on Saturday but ran out of daylight and will finish removing the motor and box next Saturday. I will take the motor and box as well as the adaptor plate, clutch and pressure plate, driveshaft, radiator, electric fans, (one in front and one behind the radiator), engine and gearbox mounts and brackets. Anyone thinking of doing a repower with a red, blue or black motor into a Coaster Bus let me know as I don't want these parts. The bus will be taken to a paintball venue to be used as an 'ambush area'..... Pick up from Blackbutt Qld. Use my handle @hotmail.com to contact me. I doubt it the 186 wouldn't have the low down power the original motor had it would just use heaps of fuel while your reving it hard in the low gears is what Ive noticed in every other bus thats been re-powered with a car motor. |

Nowhere near as good for that sort of application as a 3.4L diesel. A bigger petrol engine yes, like a petrol Landcruiser 6cyl or a 327/350 SBC. |

People used them because they were ten times cheaper than rebuilding the original diesel motor.

The motor and box are out. Removed the mounts off both side of the engine, alternator etc and lifted the bus off the lot. Engine number is 186P189835 with an EH Sump. Would that be HK or HT? Thanks for all your input people. Cheers, Ron |

I have the 186 in the shed complete with the dellow gearbox adaptor plate. Does anyone know if the bolt pattern for the coaster box bellhousing is the same as the W50 Celica Box? I don't have a bellhousing on the W50 so I can't trial fit it? Is the input shaft the same in the clutch spline and spigot bush? Thanks. Ron |

I did take some interest in this over 10 years ago when I pulled apart a dual cab Dyna and a BJ40 Landcruiser to get mechanicals to fit my Daihatsu Delta V90. But I can't remember exactly the details of what was the same as what. From memory the Dyna/Coaster gearbox is far heavier duty that the lightweight Hilux boxes, and I think from memory the Landcruiser box was the same as the Dyna on the bellhousing. Pretty sure the 5spd boxes that the likes of Marks 4x4 and Rod Shop used to sell for Landcruisers came from Dynas as well. |

When I was running a W50 steel-case celica (similar box used in Hilux 2WD 18R/20R/22R) as well) behind a 202, the catalogue clutch that suited it was listed as a Dyna clutch. It was the right combination of Toyota spline, and Holden clutch diameter. You'll find commonality across many Toyota items - the same output spline pattern is used across 4 & 5 speeds from the 70s & 80s, and I know from experience the (jap driveline) Corona, Celica, supra, 2WD hilux all ran the same input shaft spline out & length, and the same with the output and even the speedo cable. Same way the Aussie 4 speed, trimatic, TH350 & TH700 all hae the same output shaft spline pattern & size. Can't help you with the bellhousing face, but this page has an image of the pattern: http://dellowconversions...225-manual-bellhousing/
The W40 (4 speed) and W50 steel-case have the same bolt pattern - 4 bolts in the vertical almost-perfect-rectangle pattern, with the input shaft hole in the upper 1/2 of the rectangle. Compare that image to what you have. Other Toyote 5 speeds are quite different in their pattern. |
