Hi All
I have a rather early 253 and it has this distributor fitted. Anyone recognise the engraving and what it means?
The end of the part number (as shown) and the number above starting 9230 G or 6 *** have both had the end digits smoothed/filed off.

Cheers

9 230 060 119 will be the Bosch number for the dizzy with the curve that was in this one. It will be a development unit for a revised 253 or 308. Remember GMH didn't throw anything away that could be used. Normally they'd stick old stuff like this into an internal car, use it and then sell it off to dealers as a used car. If you can find what dizzy had 9 230 060 119 on it this will be an Engineering unit to develop it, possibly used on GMH's dyno. 743xxxx is originally a 253 dizzy, so this may just be the development unit for the 308 HT engine, or maybe for a revision later like LJ XW7, LH L34 or HJ 308. I don't have dizzy numbers earlier than HJ, and it isn't the same as normal HJ 308.

I have the part numbers for HT - HJ V8 as follows.

253 - 7434981 (Bosch 9 230 063 800)
308 - 2807236 (Bosch 9 230 063 801)

Anything earlier would have to belong to a development unit.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

In Fred James's report of the development of the 253 and 308 he says they built 113 pre-production engines plus a number of development engines prior to that. My guess is that distributor is originally off one of those given the relative Bosch numbers to the production engines. It probably has a slightly different advance curve. The engine itself may even be one of the development engines. Does it have 253 on the side or is it blank? Do you have the car the engine came from or just the engine?

Nope, just the engine missing the car. The block does not have 253 as part of the casting. You can see where a plate has been used to cover what was to become the 253 or 308 numbers with the casting date of late 1968.

That is normal for the earliest 253, the early 308’s had HP on the same spot.

Your engine may well be a development engine or it may just have a development distributor. It may not have an early engine number if it is a development engine, it may have not had a number initially and got put back together and sent through the engine plant and been treated as a normal engine and given a number then. Who knows? How well do all the casting dates on components fit together?

Have you got the original rods for that engine Ausjacko are they just the same as other Holden V8's, if it is an original early one maybe the rods were like my HP block rods were, ground down by a belt sander on the sides still sitting way proud on the forged casting, like as if they wiped the dag's off and the rods were a lighter colour with a sharper feel grit. but it had just crap std bolts.

Hi Castellan
Have not removed the pan as yet but will let you know.

HK, thanks for the other info.

Next I will ask you about the engraving I found on the spring towers on the front end. Found that both sides had 'CSP' in 25mm lettering engraved into them. Only thing I can think of is that it means coil spring perch but that makes little sense- to me at least. Thoughts anyone?

Cheers
Jacko
