The HK327 handbrake return spring should be part 7449424 according to the parts manual and should be hooked into a small hole drilled into the drivers side seat nut plate (YELLOW dot) according to several other cars I've seen, but mine wasnt. My drivers side seat nut plate dosent have the small hole and there was no sign of the spring ever being hooked into the rear of the plate either. There was however an obvious wear mark in the larger hole (RED dot) in the floor brace directly behind the seat nut plate so obviously my spring had spent many years in that location. The only way to reach that location is to have a longer spring and thats what I've installed, but apparently the longer spring wasnt available until 1970 so I've been told. So is this location a change during HK production or is it just another Dandenong thing? Should I use and overstretch the 7449424 spring to make it fit or stick with the longer spring that never existed yet fits like a glove? I'd rather not drill a hole where there wasnt one before. Thanks, Wayne

Hi Wayne, I don't know the actual answer to your question from an originality point of view to your vehicle, but my HT GTS has the spring as per the way you have it now. I recall a friend's Hk 307 GTS had a different pull arm (I'm referring to the gold one in your pic) that had a small lever on the otherside of the pivot bolt (where the split pin and cover is) that the spring attached to, pulled back to the cross member, into one of those relief holes at the end near the bolts.

I have seen HK 's with the straight part of the spring slid inside the small hollow section next to the bolt I have drawn a black line to indicate I just don't have or can find a picture or photo of the spring to suit

HT30737, I believe where you have drawn the line pulls the lever the wrong way. The Hk I was talking about the spring was to the opposite side of the gearbox crossmember (to one or the other of the hollow sections) but not in that hole in the gold lever but an extension of that lever out the otherside, so the action of the spring pulled the short extension to the front and therefore pivoted the main part of the lever to the back of the car

My HK GTS is as Sandaro says. It is a week 1 July 1968 car, but all of the driveline, exhaust, crossmember, banjo etc came from a really low mile untouched HK Brougham. But obviously Powerglide and single exhaust though. |

I think your edit is correct for all other HK's but I'm talking about handbrake on HK327 with Saginaw gearbox. This is the arrangement you're talking about. Different spring hooked into a different location using a different intermediate arm. HT350 were different again and I think HG350 changed once again. Pafe 224 of the original SP HK manual #75 shows a great image, but I can't see the spring. Edited by user Saturday, 18 May 2019 11:11:24 AM(UTC)

I found the same image after I had sent my post my mistake thinking of the standard models Thanks

I do remember hearing that the car used in that publication was a brand new car. Did they definitely have a spring? Your car is a long way into M21/M22 4spd use so you'd think they had it sorted by then! Where is it in Silverfox's Acacia Ridge car? I'll also get my mate to look under my old Red 327 and see if it has a hole in the seat plate, its body was built and painted in August but wasn't assembled until October (as Acacia Ridge missed out on the May assembly Tonawanda engines).
You'd imagine they took all the "complete" photos before pulling the car apart for "apart" photos. |

Its starting to look like every GMH plant did something different, or maybe they did nothing and the springs were installed by the dealership. My spring is where it was so that'll do me.

My mate also has a Pagewood 307 manual GTS that I’ll get him to check. |

Guys
Getting a new aftermarket gearbox crossmember made this week with the mount centred in the crossmember rather than offset 1/2" to the passenger side like the originals are.
I can't remember if the handbrake support is different or not for V8 Powerglide with single exhaust and Saginaw with dual exhaust. We talked about the springs and the lever being different but I can't remember if the mount itself changes. I just want to ensure they put the right one on if they are different. |

That part number appears to be common to all HK, so also really answers the question for me. The M21/22 shifter support must weld straight to this for that application. I'm getting one of these made but with the mount centred: https://www.ebay.com.au/...4761:g:2UMAAOSwfO1cy27U
Only using this rather than an original (with the stepdown bracket modded to centre the box) simply to give me more room around the back of the box to fit dual 2.5" pipes and for the TH350 shifter linkage. |
