COULD ANY ONE HELP TO ID A CRANK I THINK IT MAY BE STEEL. PART NO 742000 STAMPED ON IT THANKS ANDREW

dunno about part numbers, but look at the crank snout, if its been ground down from factory its cast, steel ones ahave a thin line.
also hit it with a steel object, if it resonates for a long time with a high pitched frequency its a steel crank. |

was there ever a steel 308/304 crank?

it,s the other way aroun steel has a wide forged line, cast is normally a thin parting line, i think the 308 were nodular cast iron.

Well my early E189 18/5/69 308 HP crank rang like a bell with a lighter colour to the HQ 308 crank, the HP rods same colour as the crank and had massive forging lines, don't think the crank was steel but it must be like the 351 crank in the HO as it is supposed to ring as well.

As far as 308 cranks go don't the red motor in the Group A VK get an heaver crank.
