Hi everyone, hope you are all doing well in these strange times.

I'm looking for information on cars built at Adelaide's Elizabeth plant some time in the second week of October 1968. VINs in the range of L116950 to L117180 would be very useful - the closer to L117080 the better.

HK chassis numbers would be in the HK35700(A or AA) - HK35900(A or AA) range. Toranas - I don't know (yet) so feel free to comment if you do.

If you have a car, or even information on a car that fits this description then please get in touch - it really would be most helpful in making this car complete again.

The information is to help me refine the research previously done on my GTS '327' which I wrote about here. Just so you know everything is above board.

Hi Warren!

Possibly I'm struggling to regain my train of thought. I was of the mind that a Torana would roll off the production line with a VIN containing a Production Sequence Number in the exact same way an HK would: HK XXXX1; Torana XXXX2; HK XXXX3 and so on. If that's the case, and seeing as though I'm looking for information on a window of around 40-odd cars, then Torana information from that window would be useful.

If I'm wrong then please correct me and I'll re-think my approach.

Yes they share the same sequence in the VIN but the body/chassis/engine are all numbered independent of Holden.

And Pontiac/Chevrolet sits in between. They share the PSN sequence and engine numbers but other numbers are independent. Bedford will be similar although I think these use the PSN as the chassis number like later CF and Chevrolet trucks.

I have no HK recorded in that area. I have them before and after but not in that range.

Thanks for confirming.

I'm trying to place my PSN in a range of about 40 others.

If I can rule out Torana PSNs from that 40 then maybe there are only 30 that mine can be.

Best case scenario is that I'm able to establish sequential chassis numbers of HKs and Toranas and how / if they dovetail together. That would narrow things greatly.

HK Production was just under 12000 a month and HB was just over 1200, so about 10:1.

HK was made in 4 plants and HB in two, one being Adelaide.

Most seem to be built in Adelaide but they produced less HKs than Melbourne and Sydney but more than Brisbane.

So I would estimate that Adelaide produced one HB for every 7 HKs.

And if you are lucky no Pontiac or Chevrolet in that range. AFAIK all bodies of these have South Australian body plates but only a % of them were assembled at Elizabeth so got VIN plates from other assembly plants.

Hi HK1837 and thanks for your interest and help with this one.

Just so I'm understanding correctly: Pontiacs and Chevrolets carried South Australian body plates but not all carry Elizabeth VINs due to being assembled elsewhere. So only a surviving percentage of an Elizabeth-completed percentage will be of help. But we can rule out other vehicles such as Bedfords as their build sequencing does not share the PSN sequencing used by Elizabeth for HKs, Toranas and completed Pontiac/Chevs. Yes?

I think we were working on a different ratio previously, something like 90:30, but this is helpful. Still around 120 cars per day through Elizabeth, if memory serves?

And Torana records from this period have been located? Or was it only the later cars?

Not quite. Pontiac and Chevrolet bodies as far as I know were all built at Woodville and got SA Body plates, but were assembled at most BAP's.

Bedfords got the same VIN plates as Holden, Torana, Statesman, Pontiac, Chevrolet etc and used PSN's from the assembly location. I'm just not sure if Bedfords were being assembled at Elizabeth in the timeframe you are interested in, pretty sure they do though as I have two recorded with PSN's L106599 and L189914. They use the PSN as the chassis number with an A, B, C etc in front of it just like Holden and Torana did in front of their chassis numbers from a certain time eg AHQ12345A
