Hello! A very long time ago I purchased a new front chassis, as a spare part, from Tony Packard Holden (just up the Windsor Road from Baulkham Hills!). It's an HZ front half. The current chassis in my van has seen better days so I plan to use the new front. I have obtained another van chassis (from a WB) and I plan to use the rear WB portion and attach it to the HZ front. I am uncertain how this should be done. Looking at the WB chassis, I can see a single thickness of steel for the side arms, but I am told that the new chassis just slides into the old one. Is this true? It doesn't look like it would fit. Are there any repair resources online or some specialised knowledge sources available? I have seen so much knowledge about these old cars disappear that I feel I need to do this now or it won't be able to be done soon. Thank you for any tips or pointers.

Passenger chassis is the same front but as commercial. The front half is just welded to the rear half. Put them side to side and you’ll see what I mean. Just mark the line where the passenger chassis joins the commercial one and cut it with a thin cutting disc on a grinder, and weld the new one in.
Is the new one definitely HZ? They are thinner steel than HQ-HX, same as WB.
Make sure that you keep the WB strengthening bars under the lower control arm mounts. HZ chassis should have the holes for them. |

Hello HK1837. Thank you for replying. The new one is HZ, yes, based on the position of the top control arm mount and the invoice I have. I didn't take a picture of the new chassis (I'll remedy that tomorrow) but I have found one on the web and placed it next to the WB chassis I obtained on Saturday. The HZ chassis has thin, almost C shaped arms as shown on the right of the pic, except for the rounded part with the wood sticking into it at the wall. The WB chassis is all enclosed, on the left. Do I cut down the full length of the arm, on both sides to the vertical weld on the side of the arm?

Yes. Cut where it will mean the back half of the WB will be a neat join to the passenger front chassis. The commercial chassis is only a passenger chassis welded to a back half.
What assembly plant is the HZ passenger rails from? I think the commercial rails were all built at Dandenong West truck and passenger rails done at the assembly plants. Not sure about WB though. |

The HZ rails don't seem to have markings on them. I know there is a blank area where the chassis number usually goes. What is the best way to tell where they were made? I bought it in June of 1987, not that the date helps much. Edited by user Monday, 21 September 2020 9:38:37 PM(UTC)

Spare part rails, I forgot you said that. Not sure where they were made, probably Dandenong.
Depending upon when your HX was made the HZ rails might even be right for your van. If it was complianced 6/77 onwards they had HZ rails. |

I tried emailing - not sure it worked. Late last night I found the following two pics from an HX Parts Catalog on the net. The interesting part is in the two names - with Model 70 being the Panel Van and Model 80 being the Ute. Bar Assembly - Rear Side and Bar Assembly - Centre Side That, in my mind, confirms what I was thinking and that you were describing. I also took some pics of the donor WB chassis and the HZ front part, that show the thin arm much better. Edited by user Tuesday, 22 September 2020 7:44:25 PM(UTC)

I saw the email about 10min ago. I was going to send you that same image plus another with all dimensions. Probably not until later in the week though.
That member 4, along the middle of it will be your join. Half of it is already on the passenger rails (the outer half).
That WB commercial rear half is missing the piece that mounts the spare wheel winch, make sure you keep this off your old chassis. You can see the holes on the passenger chassis for the chassis strengthening bars.
