Looks like I have blown the bolts on the banjo. Actually the bolts are fine, as are the bearings but the rest is a mess. All the gears, with the possible exception of the ring gear are chipped or broken (spider gears). Not sure what the cause was but it just locked up and that was that. Plenty of debris in the housing and part of the broken pinion shaft jammed between the crown and ring.
It's a 2.78 LSD unit, apparently from a Brougham originally.
While banjo centres seem abundant, similar units are few and far between so I just want to check on compatibility. From what I can gather, there is a fair amount of exchangeability between these, if I am willing to swap out any 6 cyl yoke for the v8 one (including preload etc). I'd just like to get it running for now.
Apart from course or fine splines, what centres won't go in the housing? There seems to be more 3.55 units around but that might be a bit short. Will I miss the LSD if I lose that?
Car is HK Monaro with essentially stock 307 and Powerglide.
All thoughts appreciated.

You should be able to remove one from an LH SLR/5000 wreck. They used the same centre. |

The Housing will suit 3.08 and 2.78 centres which have a long bolt at the bottom, the 3.36 and 3.55 are different but I imagine could fit with a different bolt.
Whether you will notice the LSD depends on how you drive your car. If just for cruising No. If you are still power sliding the Monaro through turns or doing as bit of dirt road driving then Yes, you will notice.

As a straight bolt in only 2.78 or 3.08 banjo, but has to be a coarse spline so rules out lots of V8 Torana. You may luck an LH or LX 3.3 auto centre and have to swap the yoke. LSD centres are hard to find and too dear. If you want a permanent solution and want to keep the banjo your best bet will be find good 2.78 gears and get it rebuilt with a new Tru trac centre. It will probably mean getting new billet axles made and probably 28 spline. You’ll find good 2.78 gears in a VB-VH Commodore. https://www.harrop.com.a...-holden-banjo-28-spline

Thanks for the replies and pointing me in the right direction. I might be able to get a cheap(ish) 3.55 locally but would need to change the yoke to v8 to match the tail shaft. Could get me back on the road relatively quickly, or at least be able to move the car! A bit short for the highway, I'd think. Stock 307 ... Powerglide .... power slides .... no. Just a cruiser so with the rarity of the LSDs I'll live without it. That Harrop unit looks the goods. Very nice. Better than the bulk of a 9 inch. EDIT: Meant to ask, what is the difference between the 6 and 8 yokes, I'm guessing size? Are the dimensions around anywhere? Edited by user Tuesday, 1 December 2020 6:53:42 AM(UTC)

Uni size. You have to change the diff housing to fit a 3.55, or modify it. Not sure if a shorter bolt works?
Best to buy a 2.78 or 3.08 ready to go. But the chances of finding a good coarse spline one today ready to use is slim. About $500-$5-600 for one that may need rebuilding is almost silly. |

But seriously though, your best bet would be to find one from another HK Brougham. All HK with 307/Glide were factory fitted with LSD 2.78:1. In HT HG Brougham 2.78:1 was also standard but the limited slip (G80) was an option. HG 253/308 Trimatic Kingswoods and Premiers also had 2.78:1 ratio open wheelers. |

Yes 3.55 and 3.36 will go into a 3.08/2.78 housing with two short bolts at the bottom in lieu of the two long bolts. Copper washers under heads of bolts essential to prevent oil leaks.

Brilliant, thanks. Lots of good info here.
I have a line on a 3.08 non LSD centre with a v8 yoke. Should bolt right on! We'll see how we go. Might give the old bus a new lease of life.

3.08 banjo was supposed to be optional on HK V8 auto from about Monaro/Brougham release. Never seen one though. Features manual shows that you should have been able to get them in non-LSD as well, haven’t seen one of those prior to HT either. Early V8 auto GTS was supposed to be standard with 2.78 banjo and optional with 3.08 banjo or 3.36/3.55 Salisbury but from about the start of August 3.36 Salisbury became standard. It should go a little better than with a 2.78 anyway and less likely to break with an open centre. |
