G'day guys
I'm comparing a couple of torana id tags, (both LH), with similar original motor/box, one tag has axle as GU4, & other is GV4. Can someone enlighten me what these ratios are please
Thanks for any help Ian

Wow, that was easy, Thank you dr Terry. I was a bit confused, & Google didn't help much.
Also, what is the best reference material for this type of question, so I don't keep asking the same silly questions.

The next one (& last) will be available early 2021. Another book that's worth look is Warren Turnbull's Black Book. He is on this site, send him a PM. Dr Terry |

Thank you, once again. What ratio would've been the standard & which one optional? Both these cars are L20 M20

Depends. L20, M20, GV4 was standard on an LH XV1 (Gpack) but normally on LH L20 + M20 you got GU4. |

If you find an L20 M20 LH S with a GV4 rear axle code, 99.9999% of the time it’ll be a Gpack. Same with a HQ V8 Belmont sedan, if it’s an L32 M20 GV4 almost always an SS. Gpack a have a great mystery around TRIM codes, they are very confusing. I’ve found 3 different codes so far. For an LH SLR: 8D69 on the VIN tag 8VD69 in the model code. There is no SLR 3300. Just LH SL/R Edited by user Thursday, 10 December 2020 5:35:20 PM(UTC)

Just to avoid confusion what HK is saying is the base model, that came with the 3300 engine was the base model SL/R and was known as such

Not a base model, it was an SL/R. They came with a 3300HC engine. You could option it with a 4.2L V8 which didn’t even change the rear axle ratio (still 3.08), but it was still an SL/R. Just like a HJ Premier was still a HJ Premier if it had the standard 3.3 or optional 4.2L or 5.0L. The separation of 6cyl and V8 models ended with HQ, where a HQ Premier was a different model to a HQ V8 Premier. Of course GMH gave the 5.0L optioned SL/R it’s own identity, is SLR5000. It appears to have been a last minute decision, there was only supposed to be the XU2 with the SL/R confined to 3300 and 4.2. But it’s introduction was delayed and the SLR5000 got put in the range for LH release with the XU2 name dropped and the car it became was called SLR5000 with L34 engine option. Once again, thanks guys. Great information. I have always called the sl/r's by their capacity, just to make sure the listener knows what I'm talking about, as some people still think any sl/r is a 5000!
I have now confirmed that particular car as an SL/R, With the 8D69.
So now the g pack.. I don't do Facebook, but a mate sent me pictures of a g pack currently for sale, to show me what someone was asking for basically a rolling shell with engine. I bought a g pack about 20 years ago to strip out, as I was after the steering uni's for another project. The car is complete, fairly original, sunburnt paint, some surface rust, but running a 253, still sitting in one piece. Question: is it worth restoring, being I don't have the original engine? Is production numbers of g packs known? T.I.A.

They shouldn’t be worth squat, but like HQ SS have a following and are valued. Any LH body is valuable today. In the 80’s and 90’s they were parts mines like HQ SS and Sandmans. Can you get me tag images? I’ve been trying to figure out why I have found at least 3 different trim codes on XV1’s whereas they should in theory be all the same. Norm published XV1 numbers in Torana Tough somewhere. They were pretty high numbers from memory, like HQ SS. Also like SS there was two builds as well. I only have the body tag from the for sale one. I am famous for being a techno-phobe, I will give it a go to send it. The car I have is fairly buried, but will get them to you at some stage

Only need the body tag, it is where the trim code is. I can date the car by it’s PSN off the tag.
Send me an email (not PM) from here and I’ll reply so you have an email address to attach images to. |

A mate may have an original G pak engine still behind the shed sitting from 1984 but it's split along the block water jackets, pulling 7000RPM does that to them. A G pak with any engine would be fine, even a Plus 4 with a V8 tossed in would sell well, a mat put a 6 in his wife's Plus 4 because it was the cheaper option to do. But I do like the G pak in yellow, not red and green is ok. even tho I had a white SL/R 5000 with all the L34 flairs.
