Hi fellas,My old holden(red motor 202) lately is having starting issues.Starter motor seems to be working fine and isn't very old.Sometimes it takes many seconds to fire and sometimes just won't start.No fuel issues(getting a nice squirt of fuel down the carby).Have changed the ignition points and condensor but not convinced they were the problem and starting has been no different.I have noticed a few times when I've wound it over on the starter it starts when I release the key(back to just ignition on).What do you think that tells us.Help is appreciated.

Maybe the contact on the ignition switch that the pink wire connects to is not closing. This puts 12V straight to the coil. When you switch it back to ignition on it closes the contact for the yellow wire which has a resistor in the harness so you only get 9V or so to the coil.
I have seen the reverse happen before when the ballast resistor goes open circuit, and the car will fire in the start position but stop in the ignition position. |

Along the lines of what HK said. I had your problem in my hq. I had to replace the start wire (12v) between ignition switch and the coil (may have intersected at firewall? With the 7v wire?) Memory is poo, it could have been the other way around that mine wouldn't run once started and had to replace the 7v wire Edited by user Saturday, 2 January 2021 6:06:03 PM(UTC)

Can't believe it fellas.Starting issue solved in minutes.2 years ago put new starter motor in.Auto electrician friend wired it up for me(little different to original).He also fitted a single fuse, fuse box to firewall in engine bay.Working around carby a week ago must have bumped top of protruding grip of fuse and partially dislodged it.Cleaned it and pushed in proper now fires up every time.Out of curiosity,I removed fuse while running and engine continued to run but to switch motor off wouldn't start again.Therefore it must be part of the starting circuit which is also providing full voltage to the coil.Frankly don't like this fuse box too vulnerable to many things.Happy days.I love cheap repairs.
