A friend has just brought a VY 1-Tonner and asked me to have a look at the deck mounting to see if I knew why it has extensions on top of the Holden chassis. It looks like the extensions could be removed to make the deck lower ? Any help on this one ? Thanks Mark. |

The chassis extensions may be to accommodate a longer tray? The factory Triple M alloy tray is only 2150mm long from memory. Most dealer's were able to offer longer aftermarket tray alternatives. Some pics of these extensions and the tray would be helpful. I should also note that the bolt holes for the tray mountings are on top of the chassis not the sides. Thanks Mark. there is a fuel tank in the way.... which is why any tray or flat top needs raising this pic of the rear of the cab/chassis (which bolts to the cab) shows why... They don’t need to be raised. The “bearers” on the tray that run front to back sit straight on the rails. They are normally about a 3” C section. The tray boards then run across the C sections with a perimeter section that holds it all together and also hold the hinges. The tank parts that sit above the rail level tuck in under the boards. Sometimes they will have mounting brackets though to lift the tray up a bit. You would need some kind or riser bracket for the front mounts though. On the original 1-tonners they had bolt on supports up the front that the very front of the tray C sections sat on with a bolt holding them down, and you just used a pair of big U bolts on each side that held the C sections down to the rails. The tray 'C' rails have to sit higher off the chassis rails on VY/VZ than the HQ - WB. The lowest I could go on mine was 75mm above the rail, which sits the alloy deck just above the filler neck. I had to cut and remove a section of the tie rail and make a scallop in the perimeter rail to clear the filler neck & cap. Edited by user Wednesday, 20 January 2021 7:50:15 AM(UTC)

If you move the filler neck can it be lower? I remember some of the older alloy trays purpose built for HQ-WB had a scallop in the perimeter rail and a gap in the tie rail for filler neck clearance like you have done. |
