I have a HR Premier which I have asked advice about before on this forum and HK1837 and Doctor Terry have been very helpful. The tag numbers are as follows; Body HR235 MR 11978M Trim 1140 E67 Paint 587 8696 Insert 162 Top Black VP Small tag MO79782 Firewall HR12665M My question relates to the original engine number. I have access to a quite a few 186A engines. I realise that I will never find the original engine however what number range should I be looking for to get close to what the car was manufactured with? Thank you.

I have a HR ute that was Dandenong assembly with PSN M83375. Its engine number was 161R54643, obviously a manual. So that will give you a ballpark idea to look for an engine serial number less than 54643. Just remember engine numbers do climb over time but they do jump around by 1000's, and often the higher volume engine's have numbers higher than lower volume, so a 186 auto engine may well be far lower than a manual 161 in consecutive cars. However yours being package code 162 will be 186 manual which were a relatively higher volume engine. I don't know though if I'd be bothering trying to get close to the original, just use the best one you have, be it a 186A, 186K, 186N, 186P, 186S, 186L etc. Even NG or NJ, those were the post HQ Nasco replacements for early Holden 179 and 186, although certain XU1 people have it in their heads they were for LC XU1 and thus foolish people pay big $ for them. 161 and 186 engines are numbered all together and are sent to all 5 factories, with highest volume in Sydney then Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth. SO a variation of 4000PSN could be a variation of 12000 to 20000 engine numbers, depending on plant.
