Hi experts, I am about to rebuild my 149 engine but the original cam timing gear is a bit worn. Is it better replaced with matched alloy gear and if so straight cut or beveled? Thanks in advance.

for about the same money you can do up a 179 or 202.
however, an alloy timing gear will save you from an embarrassing engine failure and is highly recommended.
Straight cut are favoured by the hot rodders fot the "noise" but personally I find them noisy and annoying especially on a long run.
I don't see any benefit from them
I wouldn't worry too much about matching them the alloy will wear in soon enough.
But be careful that the gears match up there is a difference in the later model gearing if you buy a matched pair you would be safe enough
just cost a bit more.
Note the new gears will be little noisier than the fibre ones but much more reliable. should see the engine out.

edit just realised I probably confused you even more.
when I said the gears will wear in I meant the tiny irregularities in the teeth. But the ones to be wary of are the different gaps between the teeth. They can stop the teethmeshing completely. This happens sometimes if you but the timing gear separately from the crankshaft gear.
You should be safge enough buying a new pair though.

No, I am aiming for a refresh rather than complete rebuild, the engine seems to be in reasonably good condition but needs a good clean. Are the 149 pistons hard to find? I have a second engine with good second hand .0020” oversized as a backup though.

I think most of them are hard to buy, or at least have much of a choice outside 186 and 202. JP may still make them to order but they aren’t cheap. Keep an eye out for old stock oversize pistons on EBay, Gumtree etc if you are running a baby Holden 6 as it’s a good way to future proof yourself. Don’t discount STD size 179 either as you can use them in any 173 or STD 186 as they work for 179. I did see some Endurotec 173 pistons recently too, not sure if they do 149 or not.
