Depends which Salisbury you mean. A HK-HT 10 or 12 bolt will be fine however in that sized car with LSD and decent traction the 10 bolt can be broken without too much effort. A modified HQ to WB or 5.0L VB to VK will but a 308 will smash an LSD variety quite easily with wider tyres. A 4.2L VB to VK Salisbury is a disguised banjo. A VL onwards Borg Warner modified to fit Will OK too.

Could be any HT to HZ if the ute was original with a 308/5.0L.

But a HK-HG ute Salisbury is very different to a HQ to WB.

Unless the ute was a 308 manual a HT example can only be a 3.36, whereas a manual one could also be a 3.08 or 3.55 Salisbury. HG was the same except no 3.55. Always LSD too. Parts are readily available from the USA except for axles.

Whereas in HQ to HZ a 308/5.0L ute with the locally made Salisbury will normally have 3.36 if manual and 2.78 or 3.08 if auto, although 3.55 was optional and on a cab chassis a 5.0L version will always be 3.36. LSD is far less common too. Bits are very hard to find nowadays except for bearings.

If it is a HQ-WB diff don't pay too much for it. They are too wide for a HK-HG and need mods. Given you'd probably be up for a rebuild on the centre anyway plus the cost of shortening the axle tubes and new axles (you can't shorten these axles) it will cost more than its worth. If it is a 3.08, 3.36 or 3.55 it might be worth getting though if cheap enough as you can on-sell for reasonable $.

Am l right in thinking the 12 37 is 3:08 and 6 69 is the month and year.

I'd say that is probably right. If its from a HT it'll almost certainly be from a 308 manual HT or 350 HT.

3.08 Salisbury in a HT (which a 6/69 set of gears almost certainly will be if original) was only available as the economy option behind 308 manual on V8 Belmont ute or van, V8 Kingswood ute, sedan or wagon, V8 Monaro or GTS and V8 Premier sedan or wagon. The standard driveline on all of these if you optioned 308 was M21 and G88 (3.36 LSD Salisbury) which given how rare optional rear axles were would make it like 1 in 50 cars or something like that.

3.08 salisbury was also the economy rear axle on GTS350, but it was also the standard rear axle on GTS350 if M35 Powerglide was optioned.

Given how rare optional rear axles were, even with how few HT GTS350 auto were built I reckon that is the most likely source.

If the gears were built later and ended up in a HG it is slightly different as HG GTS350 were all basically standard with G94 3.08 Salisbury (some early HG GTS350 manual had 3.36 standard like HT), and 3.36 became the performance rear axle for both HG GTS350 transmissions (there was no 3.55 like HT).

Unlike HK (other than July 1968 production) where 3.08 Salisbury was the economy rear axle on HK V8 auto GTS there was no 3.08 Salisbury economy option for HT 307/308 auto GTS. It was 3.36 standard and nothing else, although I guess like HK 307 auto GTS it may have been possible to special retail order a 2.78 banjo if you really wanted to. The rest of HK-HG (other than Brougham) saw 2.78 banjo as the standard rear axle behind 307/308 auto with 3.08 banjo or 3.36 Salisbury as alternate economy options.

Picked it up years ago for project and never used it. It is missing the axles and the brake cylinders.
l presume you can get new axles but what about the cylinders. From memory they a larger dia than standard.

New axles are easy. I think the wheel cylinders are smaller aren't they than HQ-WB? They are a wierdo type anyway, there was some on my HK GTS I just took off to replace with HQ-WB rear brakes to go with the new 9".

I read somewhere that they are 9/16" dia when fitted with front Disc Brakes so I presume that if fitted with front Drums they are a different size.

not if you ask around.

There is a place in Dandenong making new axles ( standard or heavy duty thick with your choice of splines.. 28,31 or 35)
and
I just bought a new crown wheel/pinion gear set for a large 10 bolt Salisbury .. 3.36 ratio . I was also offered a new
3.08 gear set

And I have added my name to a list of 'interest' for manufacture of the mythical HD Salibury hens teeth ...3.90 gear set.
Cost unknown (depends on how many sets) but estimated to be around $800-900. That will give the racecar a bit of zoom...

Club circuit racing...the best fun you can have with your pants on

You can get axles made for just about any diff. I was talking about gears, but more about bits for the hemisphere especially LSD bits. Those 3.9 gears for Salisbury diffs were never common. They were only really homologated tor GroupC but really were nothing special, just a crown wheel off one ratio and a pinion off another, can’t remember which - maybe 35/9?
$800-$900 a set isn’t so bad if not Chinese made, but still a lot dearer than GM 10-12 bolt or 9”. Good quality $350 a set or $650 for USA made, brand new. I love that I can buy a new Eaton Trutrac in 28 or 31 spline complete with new Motive Gears in most ratios for $1400 delivered to my door! I know a 9” isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but bang for buck hard to beat. I guess if you are stuck with a 10 bolt then new gears are going to be better than those with a million km on them!
