Rank: Newbie Reputation: Groups: Registered Joined: 25/01/2017(UTC) Posts: 3 Location: Tasmania		Hi people, I need some help. I have a 8th month 73 one tonner. The fuel gauge was reading full all the time. The gauge works obviously so I replaced the sender. I replaced it with a thermal one but I think I may need a magnetic as the gauge still reads full. Would a mismatched gauge and sender make it read full or do I have another problem . Johnny.

If it still reads full you've got a short in the wire or a faulty gauge.

With magnetic style any OPEN circuit (or high resistance) will cause the gauge to show full scale. Turn the ignition on & while you're looking at the gauge, get a friend to momentarily short the wire to earth (chassis). If the gauge then shows empty you have the wrong sender. Another easier check is to see how quick the gauge needle moves when you switch the ignition on. If it moves instantly it is magnetic, if it moves slowly it is thermal. If it shows full all of the time, even with the ignition off, then the gauge is cactus. Dr Terry
