Morning all.

I'm swapping out the tank in the HK Kingswood as it has a few pin hole leaks in the bottom. I have a spare tank in good condition which I'm putting in. When I removed the old tank it had some sort of grey semi soft putty between the tank and the body, no doubt to keep dust and moisture from getting into the boot area. Not sure if that is factory or not. Probably not. Is there some sort of seal normally around the tank between it and the body. If so is it a putty type substance, do I need a gasket. What's the best approach to seal around the tank edge between it and the car?

cheers,

Ray

Some grey or black mastic will do. Comes from Bunnings in a silicone type tube that goes in a gun.

If I was you I'd clean the spare tank and seal with a KBS kit before you put it in. Sets like epoxy inside the tank and the first steps clean so much junk out you wouldn't believe it. My HK tank looked good, but the cleaning process stripped out probably a 2L Ice Cream container of rust scale and other garbage.

Thanks for the advice. I've found some Sikaflex 227 Automotive sealant that should do the job nicely.

Cheers,

I wouldn't use Sikaflex 227 for sealing in a fuel tank. That stuff sticks cures so tough you will have to cut it if you need to remove the fuel tank in the future.
Just use non hardening Mastic as HK1837 has already recommended.

As said above. Mastic ! Do not consider using Sikaflex 227 ! You will do a lot of damage getting the tank out again.
