Hi All I have an old GM crank that im pretty sure is out of a Bedford. I can't find any info on the crank numbers as I don't have any relevant Bedford Parts manuals ect. Possibly from the Bedford Extra Duty 6 cylinder 1952ish? Markings found on the Crank Cast - S50 then next to stamped LRR
Stamping - K288 - CH - GM

K288 may be the production date code. K = October 28 = day of the month 8 = the year of the decade.

Thanks I did consider that but the K threw me off as it was a model number. Have found a couple of brochures in the SA library collection with a very similar looking crank with the brochure dated 1954. Tocco coating technology applied to the surfaces gets a mention. As it would have been the first sales brochure that Kdate may be correct. Have attached a couple of photos of the old girl.

As it has GM on it It'll be from a Chevrolet or Pontiac or Buick etc engine. I don't think Bedfords got straight 6 Chevrolet engines in Australia until the 1970's. It looks like a 4 bearing crankshaft too so it isn't a GM Stovebolt but it might be a Blue Flame crank as they were 4 bearing mains. The 230/250/292 GM 6cyl engine were 7 main bearings. |

Thanks Byron, Have attached a copy of a Bedford brochure from the SA collection showing a straight 6 in 54 (I think). It mentioned that the bodies were manufactured by GMH with nothing regarding the Engines. Went over the the marked surfaces with some emery and then followed up with some boileys chalk to highlight the stampings. The GM is clearly visible in the images but im not sure if its clear due to the crap image size requirements. Ran a 2 to 3 inch Micrometer over the relevant surfaces with the dimensions marked nest to the measured points. What engines were in the early Bedfords? From the UK? Made in OZ? Although it is never Gospel, Wikipedia says that the 1953-1958 TA Bedford had a 4 main bearing 6cyl engine that was a development of the old Stovebolt 6 that was in the older M series. Then if you go and read what Wiki says about the Stovebolt, it was re-engineered in 1937 into a 4 bearing engine and was basically a Blue Flame from then onwards although not called that until the 1953 Corvette. Wiki says it was used in Bedfords. The developed Stovebolt was effectively a Blue Flame and GM was the parent of Vauxhall which was in control of Bedford. So I wouldn't be surprised if its a 216ci "Blue Flame" crankshaft. Edited by user Thursday, 12 May 2022 5:31:16 PM(UTC)

Due to the limited information available I may need to consult the Wiki but will reach out to the Bedford forums ect as I can't stand to see it turned into a letterbox stand and will give it away to someone in need of such a crank. She's in good nick with regards to wear I think and you never know. Im pretty sure you can't do down the road to your local Holdens Dealer and order a new one.
As the years pass by Its becoming harder to find these original items and im more than happy to give it a chance to find the right home.
Will look into the Stovebolt as I knew 0 about the existence of such a 6.
Would make a great name for a beer....or a bolt in an old stove for that matter
