Does anyone know what sort of finish was on the housing for the HQ grill emblem ? There is a chrome frame around the badge/emblem itself, but the housing that holds it to the grille, seems to be painted pot metal. Can anyone confirm if this housing was originally chromed, or just painted silver ?

I have a brand new HJ one here in front of me, casting number 9929988. It is chrome plated alloy, which I thought the HQ ones were as well. |

My understanding is that they were chromed at one facility and then sent off to be painted at another, externally. They were then sent back to the plant and fitted to new cars.
Pre chromed/dull badging were replacement parts with the onus placed on the purchaser of the spare parts to have them painted.
I have some HQ GTS front badges and Boot/fender badges that are chromed and not painted along with un-chromed ones and also painted.
I can't find any part numbers that specify chromed, painted or un-chromed and not painted to be able to say any different?
One would assume that a specific amount alone would be sent out for treatment to fill ex amount of new cars ordered and also for potential orders with the dull ones being the spare part provided to the consumer after he/she stoves their front end in coming home from the local speak easy

Rgds, Andrew. Painted Silver. The emblem is made up of two pieces. The base is painted Silver and the escutcheon that the HOLDEN Lion Insert fits into is chrome plated. The chrome escutcheon is permanently affixed to the base by 4 alloy pins that are peened over. If you look in the back of the emblem you will see the 4 pins peened over, similar to peening solid rivets. Edited by user Sunday, 15 May 2022 8:32:11 PM(UTC)

The point I was trying to make is that im pretty sure that all of the badging was initially chromed with the required paint layers then applied, depending on the styling requirement. In some cases leaving only a chromed border after the paint treatment. Here is some alloy chrome HQ badging that hadn't made it to paint yet.

Thank you for your answers gentlemen. I've seen a lot of these that are painted silver, but kind of assumed it was a cheap way to cover up badly deteriorated chrome. There does seem to be an awful lot that are silver though. Mine seems to be silver painted with chrome coming through underneath where the paint has worn....which points to what DW is saying. Why would GMH paint over the chrome ?

Im guessing but it would be much the same as applying paint to a car with the required layers needed to achieve a specific outcome.
Ive found that you can tell the difference between a painted badge and a chromed one due to the additional weight with them being considerably heavier.
The solid chrome surface may have also given some more durability to the original alloy structure.
It would have been a lot easier to apply a coat of chrome to 100s of items wired to a frame with the dip method than to apply it afterwards to a required specific edge on the badge.
Also maybe due to potential chipping whilst attached to the front grill, GMH would have still had a visible badge of sorts as opposed to the chrome edge being removed completely with a black block remaining?
