Hi

Just picked up an HJ 1 Tonne Ute

I can decipher the "VIN" 8M60RE J45*****J

But struggling with trim & paint etc as below

Model HJ8WM60
Body No 127714-A
Trom 1888-64V
Paint 568-15951
Eng L32 Trans M40 R Axle GV7 ??

and on the compliance plate

AH J 00725 M

I havent worked out how to post photos !!

HJ8WM60 = HJ Holden One Tonner (Cab-chassis not a Ute !!)
127714-A = Sequential Adelaide body number
1888 = GMH code for Cotillion White exterior paint
64V = Gazelle vinyl interior trim
568-15951 = Dulux shade no. for Cotillion White paint
L32 = 253 V8
M40 = Trimatic
GV7 = 3.55 rear axle
AHJ00725M = chassis no. Melbourne assembled HJ (AHJ = first series of ADRs in the HJ series)

The chassis no. AHJ.... should also appear stamped into the frame near the steering box.

At this time the only Holdens that GMH were only assembling at Dandenong were Utes and Cab-chassis. The rest of assembly was for Torana. The Utes were assembled using Dandenong built bodies but the cab-chassis bodies were painted and hard trimmed at Elizabeth hence why yours has an Elizabeth BODY plate.

If you get me the VIN off it I'll see what more info I can get for you. I need the bit after J45. It is going to be something like J452xxx or J453xxx. There aren't many 4.2 auto 3.55 cab-chassis around this time, I can see J452166, J452173, J452819 and J453391 but might have missed a couple. Also J454001.


Terry, 64V (or later 64W) is Fawn not Gazelle on a HJ Holden (or Belmont). Gazelle is a Kingswood and upwards trim. It has the same code but the vinyl is different

No it left the factory with a standard front, but this was a common aftermarket or custom upgrade during the 70s & 80s.

No it left the factory with a standard front, but this was a common aftermarket or custom upgrade during the 70s & 80s.

J452173 is October 1974 build but only just, it was completed on 30th October and sold in November. No other mechanical options other than those you already know ie 4.2L and auto. So no aircon or power steering or LSD. It was sold by dealer 301 which I have seen noted as Preston Motors in Footscray but cannot confirm for certain.

At this time all cab-chassis had the standard twin headlight HQ cab-chassis front carried over, they stayed this way until the end of HZ. During 1975 there was an Ambulance package available that got a HJ Premier (later HX and HZ) quad headlight front and this option (BO6) remained until the end of HZ. But most HQ-HZ cab-chassis had the same twin headlight HQ nose with steel grille. There was a dress-up package too RPO code XY7 called Chassis Cab Appearance, this got you chrome hub caps, headlight rims, grille and bumper bar & bolts. But it was still the same basic front.

AFAIK the XY7 appearance package also got you chrome H-O-L-D-E-N badges (across the nose) instead of the regular issue painted ones.

If its very original it will have the holes in the pillars for retractable seat belts but will have them roughly puttied up with grey body putty, and will have ordinary seat belts like a HQ commercial. HJ commercials didn't get retractables until 1975. Those 1974 complianced HJ's are odd in a few areas, like they have vented fuel tanks and carby bowls, no charcoal canister and a few other oddities like that.

Lots could have been changed by now. Is the fuel tank sealed or vented? Does it look like its got a factory vapour line up to the canister (goes under the plastic 3-pipe clamps along the chassis with the rear brake line and fuel line. The 1974 complianced HJ's had the clamps but only 2 x pipes in them (brake and fuel).
