After some troubleshooting. Recently got my red 308 up and running after no use for a year or more. New plugs, leads, fuel. Set up the timing. Starts, runs and drives but then feels like it goes out of tune after say 15 minutes driving. Idle becomes erratic, wants to stall. Need to wind it a while before it will start. Idle actually fluctuates from 700 to say 1200 in maybe 15 second cycles. Got a holley 600 vac secondaries on it. Got a bit of a cam, so I usually have idle at 1000.
The other strange thing is when the idle drops I am getting no strobe from the timing light, which has me thinking coil problem?

I have a stab in the dark. Don't know much about your setup but this sounds like a fuel or vacuum/air problem. Possibly there is just not enough fuel getting through (fuel pump OK?) After a while the engine starves for fuel just a little bit and runs rough. Cranking builds the fuel up again and it runs OK for a while. And again and again. Or a vacuum line is pinched or closed up a bit somewhere. Just enough vacuum to run for a while but then it fades too much and runs rough. Or it might be getting too much vacuum after a while. Not sure how the Holleys work though so others will know more. Good luck. Betcha love having it going again too!

I should have said, whilst cruising it is fine. It becomes apparent when I get to an intersection or in traffic

Have you checked the float level in the carby? Check it with engine off then put a rag under the bowl and start it up and see if there's a change.

Sounds like my HJ Prem, it had a 600 vac sec Holley on it. Was running like a pig. Got an original 7043284 Quadrant rebuilt and it purrs likes kitten. I also fitted a HEI dizzy and coil to it. |

Thanks for the ideas guys. Ended up being 2 things. The floats were way too high in both the primary and the secondary tanks. And it wasn't till I was adjusting the secondary float that I saw that a blank off to the vacuum port behind the carby was off.
Kudos to KBM and 202 tonner.
From a good little drive up to operating temp runs and idkes smooth now. Plus starts perfectly!
