Hi, hoping someone can advise here. I have been restoring my HD back to original and part of that has been to put the 3 speed back in. It had a trimatic put in a few years ago so have replaced flywheel, clutch etc as well.
I can’t change gears with the engine running but can run through the gears without it running. A little sticky though at times. I can start in gear with foot on the clutch and move the car forward and use the same technique to reverse as well. I can’t change gears though when the engine is running, feels like the linkage locks up. There is a nasty noise with engine running and foot on the clutch but I think it might be the release bearing, I should have put a new one in. The noise goes away when I release the clutch. Starting the car in neutral and trying to select 1st or reverse there is just a horrible clashing of gears so the 1st reverse shafts must still be spinning.
Any thoughts on why it won’t change gear smoothly? I have tried adjusting linkages according to the manual and happy with the clutch bleeding, checked it a few times and no air bubbles, clutch adjustment at the pedal is good also.

The clutch adjustment at the fork (inside the bellhousing) requires adjusting. The clutch simply isn't disengaging enough.

Thanks Dr Terry, I have adjusted the clutch to the point of not releasing at all when I take my foot off and it still won’t go into gear without grinding standing still. I am thinking linkage adjustment but have fiddled with that a lot as well. Got me puzzled.

Is the clutch plate plate in the right way round?

If the clutch is working (that is disengaging motion from the engine) then there is no motion to grind the gears. So somehow motion is still getting to the gearbox

Thanks for your replies here. Clutch plate is the right way around, I checked on a spare engine as well and I don’t think you could get it wrong, the pressure plate wouldn’t fit.
A quick update though. I have removed the side plate and with everything in neutral position I still get drive to the rear shaft. I would have thought the front and rear output shafts would be disengaged from each other at this point, am I correct I thinking this? Thanks, Graeme.

Hi Graeme. Sometimes you can get a bit of friction that will rotate output shaft when in neutral, but it definately shouldnt be locked solid.
