I was recently doing some servicing and preventative maintenance on an HR of mine.
Found out, it's got a later style Bosch distributor fitted. It had the plastic/nylon lower drive gear fitted to it (HQ era?), which I swapped out for a steel gear from an old oil pump.
My question is, should I be setting the distributor points to the HR specs being .012 - .016in. or to the HQ specs being .019 - .025in. ?
Just for reference, the HR is a 186S 4 Speed Opel (factory) so is already somewhat of a "Hotrod" š

Iād turf the whole thing and get a distributor from a WB or VB to VK. You can buy the right HEI coil now from Goss that will fit as per original. Will just mean new leads as these dizzys have posts on them. Bigger plug gaps and bridge the ignition switch start and run terminals. |

Just looked up in the HR March 1967 Handbook and its 161 ---019 to 025 , 186 & X2 017 to 024. This is the handbook I am bringing to the Holden Nationals for you .....looks like you need it. |

You Aussies just dont get it šš Its absolutely unnecessary to change something that works perfectly fine and has been for the last 55 years! The car is stock standard and the points distributor works perfectly fine š Still looking for an answer to my question š

It needs to be set to suit the engine. HQ have a lot smaller cam and engine characteristics to a HR-HG 186S or HT-HG 186. I'd still change the dizzy though. Here is the HR 186S timing specs from the GMH Engineering Technical Specs Edited by user Friday, 17 February 2023 5:49:32 AM(UTC)

Very interesting, thanks for the picture.
Those specs list the HR at .019 - .025, but the HR Workshop manual (GMH publication) list the setting at .012 - .016
Guess I'll open them up slightly and see how it runs.

Could it be that the HR specs are for the Lucas dissy, which was very common in HR ? The other thing is that you are better off setting the points by dwell angle rather than by their gap. It's more meaningful especially if the dissy is worn. Dr Terry P.S. I agree WagonDan, nothing wrong with a points dissy on a stock original car, all of my oldies are like that. |

Dr Terry is right I think. What I posted up is the GMH Engineering Technical Specs. It will be correct, far more than almost any other publication. It is also revised for 186S. |

The Engineering technical Specs would over-ride that. Even the HD Engineering tech Specs show different stuff between the dizzys. Here is the standard HD and X2. |

I think the issue here is with the model of the dissy. From EH up to early HK, Holden used a Bosch unit fitted with GB504 points, the later cars' dissies used GB534 points. It would appear that the profile of the cam (inside the dissy) was changed at this point. The earlier dissy required a gap of 0.012" - 0.016" resulting in a dwell of 36 to 40 degrees. The later points setting is specified at 0.019" - 0.025" with a dwell of 30 to 35 degrees. I think if you stick to the specs of your model of dissy you can't go wrong.
