Get people thinking.
Name the models HK to HZ where there was no optional engine? Include Statesman in the question.
Regular retail order engines only, not special order eg L30 in a HQ V8 Premier wagon or export only engines. Do not count special vehicle packages eg XV2 (HQ SS) is a HQ V8 Belmont sedan. By optional engine I don’t just mean size but also power output and/or compression ratio. So view 161H and 161L as different engines. Basically if the engines have a different prefix they are a different engine (except for 11 on Statesman). Do not count if an engine’s specification changes mid series eg HZ 5.0L changed from 9.7:1 to 9.4:1 mid 1978. Or the engine spec changed slightly due to North American year model variations.

No 307 HT Brougham, all 308. No WB ( I only said to HZ). No to HZ SLE (same reason no HQ SS). No to HT and HG GTS 350. There was an optional 350A engine.
So you have 10 of the 19 covered ( I have to double check a few in paperwork to be certain that certain engines were not on order forms). You have got these right:
HK 81837 with L34 HK 81469 with L30. HT 81469 with L31. HG 81469 with L31. HJ 8WS69 with L31. HJ 8WT69 with L31. HX 8WS69 with L31. HX 8WT69 with L31. HZ 8WS69 with L31. HZ 8WT69 with L31.

Yes, that is another 8 of them, I wanted to check HQ Premier models, LS and Statesman for L23 (202 LC) availability. It wasn't a regular engine option.
HT 80737 L66 HG 80737 L66 HQ 81135 L20 HQ 81137 L20 HQ 81169 L20 HQ 81569 L20 HQ 81837 L30 HX 8WQ37 L31
There is another V8 model, plus another 1/2 correct answer. Then another that was marketed on Australia as an option package but had its own model code. Total 21.5. |

Yes, that is the V8 model I mentioned. Think about the other two ( or 1.5 ). |

So far:
HK 81837 with L34 HK 81469 with L30. HT 81469 with L31. HT 80737 with L66. HG 80737 with L66. HG 81469 with L31. HQ 80260 with L32. HQ 81135 with L20. HQ 81137 with L20. HQ 81169 with L20. HQ 81569 with L20. HQ 81837 with L30. HJ 8WS69 with L31. HJ 8WT69 with L31. HX 8WQ37 with L31. HX 8WS69 with L31. HX 8WT69 with L31. HZ 8WS69 with L31. HZ 8WT69 with L31.
The hints for the other two that I know of, one is a HQ. The other a HZ. Both are a bit obscure. The above 19 were my originals, well done justgm and Sandaro!

Correct Dr Terry, that is the 1/2 I was talking about.
HZ 8WQ69 with L31 (later HZ). HZ 8WS69 with L31. HZ 8WT69 with L31.
Only the HQ to go. |

I'm still looking for clarification in GMH docs on the availability of QE, QM and QS engines.
Preliminary Engineering Technical Specs (issued November 1970) state that:
QE (173LC) and QM (202LC) were export only on 81135, 81137, 81169 and 81569 but available on all other L6 models. QS (253HC) was available on all V8 models except for 80837, 81469 and 81837, but was revised in February 1971 to be export only.
However both the Features Manual (which is what the Eng Tech Specs became) and the POA docs both show QM and QS as export only across the board, QE was available on Holden cab chassis, Belmont (sedan, wagon, ute and van), Kingswood (sedan, wagon and ute) and Monaro. Something must have changed later in the 70's as I have ID plates off a number of HX and HZ with L23 (QM) engines. GMH may have stopped making low compression 173/2850 at some stage and started to make the low comp 202/3300 available on special order. Doesn't change the list though as the 6cyl HQ models listed were L20 only and the 80260 was L32 only as neither QE or QS were available locally as regular engine options. |

What about HQ One Tonner - LD1 (173) only from Nov-71 (release) to Oct-72. As long as you don't count the L21 lo-comp 173 motor.

I was counting the low comp 173 as an optional engine. |

That is the car but its model code is 84669. It was called 81469 XU7 internally but the body plates are stamped 84669 and all sales references are 84669. It was technically an export vehicle as it was sold SUP and CKD overseas but was also part of the Australian model line up in such it was “exported” as a Consular car to Consulates located within Australia borders. Well done. |

That’s the VIN tag, not the BODY tag. The model is only on the body tag. That VIN has an error in it I think, the PSN is wrong. |

OK, lets try expanding this to Torana, LC to UC. Forget 4cyl as most of the models with no engine options would be 4cyl.
So how many (if any) LC to UC Torana have no engine options. I don't know this one of the top of my head like I did with Holden/Statesman so I'll have to research.
Same rules, ignore option packages which may actually rule out most contenders. |
