An XU1 is the same model code as a GTR just an option package like a HQ SS. An SLR5000 is also an option package on an SLR. So really none of those apply. There might be an obscure one somewhere though.

I had a quick look through LC and LJ and I can't see anywhere where there wasn't an optional 6cyl on any model. Originally 2250 standard with 2850 optional, and later in LJ 2850 standard and 3300 optional. The GTR was standard with 2600S, 2850S and 3300 with the XU1 engines applied with an option package.

There is only one UC model standard with 6cyl and that is the 8UG69 (S sedan) which was standard with 2850 and optional with 3300. Can't think of any LH or LX either.

Go for it if you want to list them as I don’t know much about NZ assembled stuff. I deliberately left out export stuff though as most people don’t have the resources or knowledge to answer the original question if they were included.

I think it would be only the LC GTR & LJ GTR, because the XU1s are just 82911 (GTRs plus an option package) & SL/R5000 are option packages on 8VD69 & 8VD77.

Actually I think you nailed it Terry. LC GTR prior to XU1 release and LJ GTR after about 10/73 when XU1 had ceased production.

I believe it would be all GTRs, because the XU1 wasn't an engine option per se, it was an option package.

In other words you couldn't option an XU1 "engine".

That was how it was done though, like the L34 engine option in LH it was part of a package and not an engine option, and it was only called the "L34" package based upon the engine option as GMH decided not to call it XU2. The auto engine on GTS350 was the same as well, you didn't option the lower power engine, it came standard with the auto box along with other stuff (mainly deleted not added). When you look at the PTC's in the LC and LJ Features manuals the XU1 engine is listed an option on model 82911.

That's splitting hairs though.

The plain fact is that you cannot order an XU1 engine for a GTR, unless you get the entire package.

Same as GTS guards on an SS though or Sandman. Just part of a package. Fact stands though that high performance 3100 later 3300 engine was optional on 82911, it just didn't come as an engine but with a special vehicle package called XU1 - this was not really different to how GMH and Holden regularly did these things, like if you optioned a 308 engine on a HT V8 Premier, you automatically got a 10 bolt rear axle, a 4spd manual gearbox and console shift. If you optioned an auto transmission on a HT-HG 81837 you got an entirely different engine. Again with HJ-HZ cab-chassis, to get a 5.0L engine you had to accept an M41 transmission and a BO6 option package. I do get the distinction though, as Torana never got the unique model codes that the Holden Musclecar got (as in 81837(.

I agree though that GTR fits the bill as for a period in each of LC and LJ there was no XU1.

L34 was an option pack on LH, on the LH SLR/5000 only ( a bit like A9X on the LX SLR5000)
and not available on anything else

but a correction, yes the LH model with the 308 engine was to be 'XU2' .. as sticker on a guard
and as a option pack on the SLR model range but the marketing gurus, the advertising agency in
George Patterson HATED that. XU1 they got but XU2? ... naah, pffft!

the argument about what to call the top of the line 'sports' model on LH raged.. and voices got raised
arms and fists pounded meeting room tables ( I got this for a high up sales guy who I still know)
People got aggro about this !

and eventually some sense was retained when some suggested SLR (yeah obvious that!) then '308'
Bit naff ... SLR308 then SLRV8308 (marketing hated that) then it was suggested ...SLR5000. Tick!
and no, never SLR L34

A9X was available on LX SS as well but it is really 8VD69+L31+A9X. It is an evolution of type on LH SL/R homologation but based upon GMH pretending that there was an LX L34! In reality though L34 is no different to HQ XW8, ie GTS350 sedan. It is an option package on a lesser model.

I have some of the internal GMH paperwork that shows XU2 was supposed to be released with LH, XU2 was the special vehicle package that included the L34 engine, basically the same thing as the XU1 package was to GTR or XW8 was the HQ V8 Kingswood. However it was purposely delayed probably as the Supercar scare was still front of mind. As a result there was no 5.0L LH available. So they instead made the SLR5000 available by adding the 5.0L engine to the LH SL/R plus the rear spoiler, front spoiler and decals. This also softened the impact of the XU2 when it was released, which we now all know they dropped the XU2 name altogether and by default the package got named by its engine.
