Gday lads and lady’s First question is I have a 10bolt Salisbury diff in a hg that I suspect is out of a commodore…but it has drum brakes, the hq stud pattern and I’m sure it’s 1500mm wide from face to face of drum, with a sway bar fitted also…is there any way I can work out what exactly it has come from…iv found the ratio stamped on the washer plate behind the yoke but no other stamps or tags yet ? Second question is…I’m taking the rusty sub frame off my hk and I’m having trouble nocking the bolts threw at the bottom … is there a trick to it or just get angry with em ? Also on a side note to the second question can I remove sub frame with the steering gear and that frame still connected ? Thanks for sharing your knowledge if ya choose too..I’m trying not to get angry with this thing as iv learnt that can mean more work down the line.. Cheers Rock.

Is the diff a proper 10 bolt as in HQ-VK V8 or a baby 10 bolt (disguised banjo) from UC to VK/WB? Remember there was a GM 10 bolt fitted to HK to HG as well. Best bet is take a photo of it (put in one of your albums and attach to post from there). 1500mm or close to it sounds like VB-VK so that narrows it down to VB-VK or HK to HG so it could be VB to VK baby or large Salisbury or HK to HG 10 bolt. What drum brakes are on it? What stud pattern? What diameter on the hub?
Those subframe bolts get all rusted in. Soak in Pentrene or similar. The whole subframe will walk off. Just have to disconnect the steering box from the column from memory. Been a while since I did it though. |

By getting a picture of it.
If its HQ stud pattern it isn't a Commodore diff as they are metric. Unless axles have been remade or redrilled. |

If it is HQ stud pattern that actually good. It means you can buy new HQ-WB rotors and get some HQ calipers rebuilt. Much better brakes. |

For the lower bolts, if you've got access to a rattle gun rotate the bolt backwards and forwards a few times while hitting the threaded end. Make sure you take the load off the bolt, but don't jack it too high as that'll put pressure on bolt. After disconnecting bolts, steering, headlight loom and rear brake line the subframe will walk off. It will pay to remove the booster as well.

Sorry guys I’m not technically savvy which means I can’t upload pics yet…diff is still in car so wasn’t easy to get pics but the tin plate is egg shaped which is good I believe and I found raised numbers on the top of diff housing… 6 4K4 Does that mean anything to anyone ?
