I've bought a HZ. It looks mostly like a HX, but some bits are HZ.

The blinker stalk has the wiper switch, which I think started with HZ. The wipers work. The washers don't, but this could be because the washer motor isn't connected.

It's got a GTS Dash, not yellow needles, and the fascia around the gauges is silver. The clock doesn't work, neither does the tacho. The indicator tell tales in the speedo and tacho worked until today when I pulled some stuff apart. The high beam tell tale works, but it's in behind the dash somewhere, I can see it illuminating white around the column down behind the dash. There's a wiper and washer switch in the dash, not the wiper dwell switch.

There's a red brake indicator light under the clock (on the right) and another red light with no text on the left.

Questions I have so far are:

How do I tell what model dash it is? Where is the high beam tell tale supposed to poke through and show a blue light? Where is the best place to send the tacho away to if it's buggered (I'll get an auto elec to confirm) to get it fixed? If the dash wiper switch works would it be worth money to sell to buy a dwell switch? Should there be a handbrake warning light?

These are all issues separate to my light switch issues, which include the dash lights not dimming and the low beams being wired into the parkers (first click brings on low beams).

If it's a HZ and was originally column shift auto would there be a plug under the dash somewhere for the factory t bar loom to plug into (selector light and neutral switch)?

I'm sure there's more but this is just from this afternoon's play time in the shed.

It's the joys of a new car, and hopefully most of this is easy for an auto electrician to fix.

Combination switch started with HX not HZ.

It sounds like you have a HJ sports dash complete with the HJ wiper and washer controls. During HJ the high beam indicator moved from the idiot light section to inside one of the instruments (speedo or tacho, can't remember which). It was to make way for the separation of the brake fail and handbrake indicators (they were combined until mid HJ). So you most likely have a HX-HZ harness with HJ instruments and the attachment isn't there for the high beam bulb. Given the wipers work off the combination switch I suspect you do have a HX-HZ harness - I assume the HJ ones on the dash don't work? Given your other issues there may have been some butchering going on though.

Yes, the harness for a proper HX-HZ is the same for column auto, column manual, floor or console shift manual and console shift auto. There is pair few plugs up under the dash that the T-bar harness plugs into, including the plug for the illumination in the console (there is a 0V connector on the T-bar harness too to screw to the body). Depending upon what the car was there may be a shorting plug pushed into one of the sockets which is the auto detent circuit which is shorted on a manual.

All HJ sports dash had high beam as the red light between Speedo and tacho. The park brake/fail is next to it. Early HJ only had 5 digit odometer which changed to 6 digit late in HJ.
HJ and HX have a different speedo, HX being white needle with the blue high beam indicator and 6 digit odometer.
HZ/WB sports dash are the same as HX with exception of yellow needles, iso diagrams on gauges, new trip meter in speedo.
HX did have the combination wiper switch same as HZ and WB.

Try flicking the adjusting knob on the clock to start it. If this fails it will most likely need new capacitors fitted.

Ok so I have HJ instruments. Hopefully I can just replace the speedo, the quad gauges all work, albeit the fuel gauge doesn't go to full when I full it up. I have a brand new sender unit I'll try fitting that to see if it helps.

The high beam light in the HJ dash had a blue lens originally. I can't find replacements for them.

My next question is about putting a t bar shifter in a car that may have originally been column shift.

The t bar mounting plate has 4 holes in it, would the floorpan/tunnel have been stamped for the floor shifter when made even if the car has a column shift?

If so great, just some cutting and drill 4 holes. If not, has anyone put one of these in, and how hard was it to get it in the right spot?

Find an original 4spd manual or console shift auto HQ-WB and trace the floor hole and the 4 x corner holes onto a piece of clear stiff plastic like overhead transparency film. Use a reference point like the little hole with the plastic plug in it behind the shifter hole to transfer the template.

Note the 4 x holes in the corners use little threaded clips. The original tunnel cutouts were oxy or similar cutout, but easy to cut with an air hacksaw or jigsaw or even a little air cutoff tool.

Also you have to run a console with that T-bar., and you can swap them around to be left or right shift. If you don’t want to use a console find a UC Torana one, you can get a vinyl boot made up to go around it. It’s basically the same shifter as the Holden one just has an integral indicator unit rather than it being part of the console.

The harness for it will be on any T-bar HQ-WB or LH-UC, and plugs straight into the dash/body harness. From memory there is also a black chassis connector too that attaches to the dash structure.

If you trace off a 4spd car, some have the little removable plate at the front of the shifter hole with two screws. Just ignore it, auto’s don’t need it. It was to clear a 4spd shifter usually on bench seat cars. And you don’t need the extra hole that a 4spd has down below the shifter hole on the passenger side. That is for the reverse switch wiring.
