I didn't think they were painted at all. That's just my observation, not from any official literature.

I never saw a painted one, been fiddling with these since the early 80's. |

Yes, I agree. Even in the 70s when these weren't very old, they just had a cast iron finish.
Having said that, they must have had some type of protective finish, because even after a decade or so of use they did appear to rust much.
