I need to replace my bent sway bar on th HJ tonner but I don't know much about them.
I think there are two sizes and am guessig they changed with the intro of RTS so about HX or HZ.
Anyine know sizes or dates and if there are any other differences?

I don’t think it matters, it’s a cab-chassis. Just fit what you find. Just get all the parts with it. There are whole kits for $350 delivered on Ebay

Hi 202, I'm thinking your guessing is likely correct. I'd replace it with the same it's got. If you've got one, you can measure it and get same. If you're not sure that the one you've got is original, maybe some good soul might measure a known original and post it up here. Just a short explain about sway/stabiliser bars. They dampen vehicle roll, ergo they have a direct bearing on lateral weight transfer, more dynamic roll results in increased tyre force against the road surface. General rules, a soft/thinner one gives good cornering grip at normal road speeds. Factory original would be best. Design engineers aren't idiots and most of the time they get things mostly right. Matching the original would be best for normal road driving. Softer dampening is good for wet weather too. Harder/thicker ones are typically used to limit lateral roll and are used for higher performance and faster speeds, like in track racing, where centripetal turning forces are much greater, hence less weight transfer and less lateral roll is required. Too much roll, too much grip can lead to vehicle roll over. Higher speeds use stiffer roll control so the vehicle will slide before gripping and rolling over. If you're planning on putting the vehicle on the racetrack, the bigger stiffer bar might be your choice. For normal road driving, the original would be my choice. The RTS vehicles (HX? HZ) were considered better handling so the stiffer bars were introduced to limit excess lateral roll the earlier vehicles did need. Merry Christmas and cheers all.

Would love to know why Holden fitted rear sway bars to HZ Utes/vans then deleted them in WB?

I believe the standard HJ one would have been 3/4 inch (approx 19mm) with a common upgrade (aftermarket) to stiffer ride with a 1 inch (approx 25mm).

I am not sure when the thicker one was introduced or whether it was available on say HJ with GTS??

There was obviously a reason most likely cost related, but my guess is for vehicles with commercial tyres and rear leaf springs it probably made little difference. Once Sandman (which was only a small part of HZ commercials by mid 1979) was finished there were very few commercials with passenger tyres. XU4 did continue into WB but I’ve only ever seen one. GMH would have saved a few $ per vehicle not welding the brackets onto the diff and chassis plus maybe $5-15 per vehicle not having to buy and fit the sway bar, uprights, nuts/washers and rubbers.
