Looking for some pre-purchase comfort on a Torana for sale that I have my eye on. Can someon eplease help decode the VIN. I'm getting conflicting info on whether its the "P" or"PC" re engine size. Would love decoding of the lot if possible. Thanks

You need photos of all tags and the chassis number plus engine number. So many dodgy examples of these out there.

Best bet. I no longer assist with this sort of stuff privately, has to be in public where everything is witnessed.

pic is of an engine number that starts with NP

from memory that is a Nasco engine number but will check my XU1 supplement in the morning .
Basically NP was a Holden replacement block used when original JP XU1 engines blew up Whistle

Yes NP is a Nasco replacement block, JP was the factory fitted block. The P in the VIN indicates an XU1 engine & the C is the model year, i.e. it was built between 1/9/72 & 30/8/73.

Word of warning though. Numbers alone do not make the car, get a 'person of knowledge' to check the whole car out thoroughly, before handing over the cash.

Numbers all work OK together. I'm almost certain the ADR and VIN tags are all good. The BODY tag has everything in the right place but I'm a little concerned how little deformation there is around the stamped characters, plus some of the characters aren't quite like those I have on a lot of other examples. The 6 and the 9 in particular look a little suspect, and the 3's are a bit odd too. Normally I wouldn't look this close but there are so many dodgy XU1 tags and cars out there it is hard to trust them. Some of the other generic characters on the BODY ID tag look suspect too, like the ' in HOLDEN'S and the lack of sharpness in some letters in the sentence starting with CORRESPONDENCE.

I'll edit this post and add a HQ tag from L219010. I have Toranas around this too and they are all stamped the same. But this HQ is quite clear. Have a look and make your own mind up. Look at the 6's, the 4's, the 3's and the 9's. Even the 8's and 5's and 1's.

Also look closely at the HQ tag. Soo the faint marks to the right or HQ80160, and to the right of the A in 21 A? Those are left by the machine that stamped these tags. This Torana has none of those. You can also see evidence of them next to the 1 and 7 in 6175 on the HQ.

The other concern is look at the state of the VIN tag, and the BODY tag looks pristine in comparison. All tags look to have been off the car at some stage.

The NASCO engine number does look OK, but again the pad is painted so hard to see if it has proper GMH machining marks. It isn't original so no great loss if its fake.

It is all hard to tell without seeing them in the flesh too.
