So I've got a mid 1971 hg wagon, 186 with three on the tree.
Pulled the engine out for a rebuild and found the 186 crank has the larger 202 style rear main seal. The machinist had not seen that before so just wondering how common that is and any info behind that set up? Any comment appreciated.

Possibly they introduced the change early ready for 202 engines?

That was my thought as well?
But to accommodate the larger seal, there needs to be a bit of mucking around to alter the 186 block too.

It is just machining though? I imagine they simply altered how they machined the raw casting, its just a neoprene seal. I've never looked hard at the NG, NJ and NK blocks they cast later in 1971 to provide spares for prior cars that GMH stated were not suitable for 202 engines, those would possibly have the 202 seal as well. It looks like HNO17 is the 149-186 seal and HNO40 is the 138-308 seal, although hard to tell as most sites seem to screw stuff up today.
