Hi,
I recently (couple of months) replaced my fuel sender in my LX Torana with a brand new unit from RS Perth. I had to take the fuel tank out, pull out the old one and replace it with the new one. No problems, my fuel gauge now worked and I was a happy man.

Anyway a couple of weeks ago I noticed a fuel smell coming from the car and the bottom of the tank was wet. Today I jacked up the rear to find that the new sender is leaking from around where the electrical pin pokes through the sender.

I would like to know how RS is going to fix this as I'll be buggered if I'm taking the tank out, removing the new sender, taking half a day off work to go to RS Perth, get a replacement, fit the replacement, put the tank back in, then wait for it to start leaking again. What are my options?

Well I sent an E-mail to RSP and they said theyll exchange it for another. however there is nothing they can do about the labour content except "apologise profusely". Now I have to work out how I can drop the tank, take the faulty sender to them during working hours, fit the new unit, put the tank back.
What a pain in the arse, Ill probably have to take a full day off work.

take a full day off work?, what about weekends?

if it wasnt for the last minute id get nothing done

Im pretty sure theyre not open weekends, though Im getting this confirmed.

most places are open sat mornings, depends on your local store i guess

i feel your pain, there is nothing worse than spending alot of time doing something and having to redo it cause of a faulty parts

if it wasnt for the last minute id get nothing done

Well this is becoming a joke. Its been 3 months since the replacement sender has been in and it too is leaking from the electrical pin. This seems to be because of one or more of the following reasons:
1. The rubber grommet is of poor quality and cracks / perishes.
2. The base of the pin (plastic) is of poor quality and cracks / perishes.
3. The force that the pin, grommet and sender are pressed together is too great placing too much stress on the components causing them to fail.
I have sent an e-mail to rare spares perth to let them know.
Does this mean I will have to keep replacing the fuel sender (which is a pain in the arse) every couple of months for the rest of the time I have my Torana?

What it means is you should buy a Sender from another manufacturer.

Please let me know of another manufacturer of LX Torana fuel senders, as I dont know of any.

How hard is it to get a secondhand one? Didnt all LXs get the same tank? You would think wreckers would have heaps of them.

How would I know if a secondhand one was any good? I just think a brand new one should work. If they will never work, Id like to see Rares stop selling them. My original (from 1977) didnt leak, it also didnt work though. How hard can it be to manufacture one that doesnt leak fuel from the electrical connector? Just use the same materials as the original. Its obvious that s*** plastic and rubber are being used. Its the same as the door rubbers, the little white plastic "T" pieces snap because theyre made from crappy quality plastic. How hard can it be to stop using poor quality materials and start producing quality products similar to Holden originals. Everyone is sick of paying huge amounts of money for poor quality. I am talking with Rares to get to the bottom of it so others dont have to go through the same trouble.

Get your old one rebuilt by Hans Schmidt the German at Ringwood Speedometer Services in Ringwood Victoria . I sent mine over in the mail years ago on a recomendationa from a guy in Meblourne and it worked a treat.

Stuart, firstly apologies for the late reply as I am overseas and just left the fuel sender factory. I have followed up your case since the first sender and hopefully have the correct answers for you. I will have a new sender unit for you next week that has been 100% checked at the factory with myself in attendance. All our sender units are 100% leak and reading tested with visual and electronic test equipment. If there was the slightest leak where you say they are happening then it would have been detected here first. The factory make thousands of units and cannot explain why both yours are claimed to be faulty in the same area. They are very concerned to get the 2nd unit back for checking. The actual fitment on a tank was at a Torana specialist in Melbourne and approved as the correct fitment before I came here to the factory. The calibration was also checked by a major instrument repairer in Melbourne and confirmed as correct. The new unit will be sent to Perth for you and we look forward to getting the one you have now returned to us.

Well it would be hard to check at the factory seeing as the sender doesnt leak at all for roughly 3 to 4 months. The calibration and fit is fine and it works perfectly, that is until the rubber / plastic fail around the pin for an unknown reason and fuel starts leaking.

The factory is concerned and wants the 2nd unit back to closely examine why this is happening to the one you have.They supply a lot to the US market and have to meet strict regulations.They havent had this before so will check and look at some long term testing as well as the immediate examination.

Could it be that they are using the wrong type of elastomer to seal around the pin, and the current rubbish that they sell as "fuel" is eating through it?
