I have a HJ with pwr steer , the steering has a dead spot of about an inch where it doesn`t steer but otherwise works okay can this be adjusted or is the box knackered. thanks cloudy

Have you checked the rest of the steering linkage? It msy not be the box. I'd be paying attention to the idler and the fabric uni joint at the box. |

I had a P/S box in a HQ that would seem to grab/dead spot, initally I thought it was the idler arm, but it turned out the bearings were knackered in the steering box, allowing the steering arm to move up & down, causing a delay in the road wheels moving, I found it by having the car running & someone to turn the wheel, while I watched the steering linkage, it's a quick way of elimination.

By the sound of it you will need an exchange/rebuilt box, but as Premier 350 has said, check the rest of the linkage first to make sure it's OK. The drag link joint at the bottom of the pitman arm can cause this problem.
It's not good practice to try making on-car adjustments on these boxes, they are better to be set up correctly on the bench after a rebuild.
