Can anyone help with a problem. There is a bit of play both up/down and side to side with the steering wheel in my HR. I have just had the steering box replaced with a new one and was wanting to correct this movement. Its the main shaft with splines the steering wheel fits on that is moveing. Is there a bush that can be replaced that will fix the movement or is it somthing more? Any help appreciated. Anthony

Check behind the steering wheel to see if the spring is present.
The upper column bearing in these cars rarely 'wears out'. The shaft is centred by a tapered ring, held in place by the spring. If the spring (or tapered ring) is missing then the shaft will be loose in the bearing & give the result you have.

Thanks Dr Terry. Ive just checked and the spring is missing. If I put a little pressure on the bearing the movement stops. I just need to find a spring. Is it a certain one or will I be able to use a generic one that fits, any ideas?? And thanks again. Anthony

An original one would be more desirable, but a generic one of the right size & tension would be OK.
