Thanks Dr Terry. Another Q if I can. Did the X2s and HR 186S come out with an ammeter standard? Just trying to work out why they have a different part number starter cable to other HD/HR

Yes, they did. As part of that package they gained not only the ammeter but also temp & oil gauges in lieu of warning lights. The unique associated items are the positive battery lead, the ammeter wiring & the oil & the (very rare) temp senders.

This gauge cluster was also available as an accessory or production option for all other HDs & HRs.

oh, thanks for that, I had thought the gauges were optional. How come the LH and HQs etc use the standard type cable that has the alternator wire when cars were fitted with ammeter? Did they change to some different ammeter setup?

The HK/T/G/Q GTS & LC/LJ GTRs etc. had an ammeter & they did get the extra wiring & the battery cable without the extra red lead attached, but HJ/LH onwards got a voltmeter so used a standard battery cable.
