if a 1985 rb gemini wont start, how do you fix it

my dad and i have stripped the whole engine nearly got it running but now the timing belts outa place and it won't start. should we strip the whole engine and start over or try to fix the timing belt

These are a free spinning engine so the valves shouldn't be bent. Check that No1 piston is at TDC and on the compression stroke. #1 Valves should be on the back of the cam lobes with a fraction of clearance,#4 valves should be rocking Check the crank timing mark to the marker on the block and the cam timing gear mark to the mark on the head,put the belt on and tension it enough so that you can "almost" twist it 90 deg. Turn the crank clockwise (looking at it)2 full turns,the marks should all line up,repeat the above if its out 1 tooth either way. Make sure all your valve are adjusted too. Then get it back on #1 comp stroke and make sure your dissy rotor button is where #1 plug lead is on the cap. Been 20+ years since i touched one but that should get you going. Thats if no major damage has already been done. Have fun!
