Hi, I have a power steering pump and box from a WB V8. Is this the same as would be used on a HZ 6 cylinder? I was hoping to fit it but was wondering if there is any problem with that. If it is compatable is there somewhere I can get a bracket to fit the pump to the 6 or will I just have to fabricate it?

There are many minor differences between HZ & WB p/st pumps & 6 & V8 as well. The WB pumps have an o-ring joint a the hose end, the HZ is flared. If you use a WB pump. make sure you also use a WB hose.

There are a set of 2 brackets to fit a pump onto a 6-cyl, along with all of the pulley & various spacers, washers & bolts. The WB pump is metric so most HZ hardware will not fit it. Also the 6-cyl pump has an extra stud protruding from the rear of it case, not there on the V8 pump. You could pinch this off another 6-cyl pump but again watch the metric thing.

Personally I would seek out a complete set of pump, pulley & brackets etc, all off one single car, so you don't spend weeks finding out why things aren't fitting & then more weeks trying to find some small parts that are impossible to find. The complete pump kit off any HQ/HJ/HX/HZ/WB/VB/VC/VH 6-cyl will do the job, as long as you use the matching hose.

Very important:- Make certain you use both brackets. If you only use the main one, which I've seen many people try, the pump will vibrate at high rpm, causing the pump cap vent to leak & spill everywhere.

Some other helpful hints for if and when you do fit the power steering box is don't forget to fit the shorter HQ style steering arms that bolt to your stub axles. As Dr Terry mentioned if you have a WB pump this will be metric, metric being all the bolt threads are metric even the bolt that has the stud protruding although the protruding stud is imperial. If I don't have one when needed I just went to a bolt shop and got a long metric stud and a couple of washers and lock nut, screwed the stud in the pump and attached the bracket ( this is the bracket that goes to the front bolt of your engine mount and actually gets it all in alignment and stops vibrating at high revs as mentioned so it is a very important bracket) . A metric pump looks like a tear drop, flat sides where as the imperial pump is more round in the main body so the metric pump will only accept a metric hose fitting but the box will still be imperial . These hoses are available at Repco or on ebay just let them know you want metric . A 6 and V8 hose is the same .If you are chasing a 6 cyl bracket set up look at DR Terry's list (Make sure you get every spacer and bolt and make note were they go) if you want a metric pump I think VC ?? VH WB but not VK totally different animal. Another thing once fitted your steering geometry is going to be out of whack because of the shorter steering arms being fitted. You will need to get a wheel alignment but a good guesstament to get you there without scrubbing the s*** out of your tyres is 370mm from centre to centre of your tie rods providing the car is still relatively standard ride height, failing that check what your toe in is before you disturb anything.
