If it doesn't rain it pours is the old saying.......

My 2nd eldest daughters VL has been running like a charmer for the last 10 months since it replaced the VH she rolled over. Early in the piece we replaced the 2 fuel pumps and it has not missed a beat.

Now I noticed it has a lot of black soot around the back bumper and tail lights, seems to have a slight miss at idle, when I revved it today a few times black exhaust soot/smoke came out (I mean it was like a black diesel exhaust smoke on a truck pulling something real heavy) apart from that the car still seem to be running ok, I am told there is no increase in fuel consumption (but this is hard to tell as we need to track down another fuel sender as the one in the tank is intermittent) Its not using any water or Oil and the only other noticeable problem as explained to me was the taco get stuck every now and then, but a simple tap seems to fix that, it also has a new crank angle sensor fitted.

Any suggestions on where to start ??
Any known common problems for VL's in this area ??

Cheers Barry

hi Barry these things were notorius for going rich when the had a miss as the 02 sensor read the unburnt oxygen as lean and adds more fuel, so check the plugs and leads first get it running on all six and see how that goes other possibiltys could be coolant temp sensor out of wack making it think its cold, so start with the basic stuff first.
Cheers pete

Check the air flow sensor too. I remember a friend having one that had the air flow sensor fail, sending it into limp home mode and he didn't notice other than it went rich.
