What would be the standard diff ratio for a HG 253 auto sedan. 2.78 or 3.08? Edited by user Monday, 22 September 2014 8:05:54 AM(UTC)

For Monaro it is either 2.78:1 or 3.08:1. 2.78 is the standard rear axle, 3.08 is the performance option. I don't have the info for all sedans ie Belmont, Kingswood, Premier and Brougham, but Monaro is the same basic lux level as Kingswood so it'd be a safe bet to say it was the same, especially as GTS is the same as Monaro too. I don't think there were any other available rear axle options in any case for a 253 HG, there were no V8 3.36:1 or 3.55:1 banjo rear axles. |

Thanks HK1837 Got a feeling it's a 2.78. Reason I ask is, I have a 2.78 LSD long bolt coarse spline banjo centre in the shed, thinking of fitting this to the HG Premier but have the option of changing the gearing with the gears I have out of a spare 3.36 single spinner. Not sure how badly it will effect highway travel though. Usually I only use it for Sunday drives. Torn between the quicker take off or highway cruising. Any thoughts? |

You can't use the 2.78 carrier with the 3.36 gears, you'll need a 3.36 carrier as well. Only 3.08:1 gears will fit. |

Bummer, made that decision easy for me.
Is that something to do with clearance, with the 2.78 and 3.08 having the different casting and long bolts? |

I can't remember exactly but these were the different style banjo, with 2.78 introduced at the start of HK and 3.08 introduced with Monaro and Brougham. All I remember is the carriers are different. Initially they weren't even built by GMH, I think it wasn't until after June 1968 (not sure exactly when) that GMH started producing these themselves. |
