The HZ ordering procedure date 31/7/78 lists the stripe options as:
DX5 - bright blue/blue green/dark blue
DY1 - orange/brown/dark brown
DY2 - orange/bright blue/blue green
DY3 - yellow/orange/red
DY4 - white/blue green/dark blue
DL7 - delete stripes.

The 1980 parts catalogue lists them all but the colour combinations are in different orders... I think this is probably a mistake though.

Only the 1979 HZ paint codes used the DY6 decal. I only have the 1979 HZ paint colour chart, the 1977 and 1978 HZ paint colour charts are needed to see what colours were available in each of those years to better determine whether or not the HX decal codes carried into the 1977 HZ range and then changed in 1978....

I would also like to get a copy of the 76 and 77 HX paint colour charts as I have the HQ and HJ ones and would like to complete the set.

Oh, and Jason is correct they DY6 decals are actually purple/plum/dark blue. I was shown a Nos set of DY6 decals and they are a different colour order to the DX5 HX decals.

No byron totally understand how long your books going to take. There is so many unknowns.

Sean, The DY6 NOS sample I have appears to be the same colours as the DX5 HX from what i can see. I do not have a NOS sample of the DY5 but looking at other people reproductions they appear to be very close. Or maybe they did not get it correct? I dont know for sure. I guess its possible that the set I have seen is in fact not DX5 HX repro but in fact DY6 Repro but with the colours in the wrong order.
Yes the DY6 is purple/plum/dark blue.
What colour samples do you have for the DX5 HX? Id be interested to see some. If you could help out with a NOS sample that will be returned than Im happy to do you a very cheap deal on some stripes.

Cheers
Jason

This is a poor reproduction DY6 decal on a Mint Julip HX van.

This is a blow up of the DX5 decal on the back of the Mint Julip van on the HX Sandman brochure. You can see the plumb around the outside, then the purple and dark blue in the middle.

This is the correct HX DX5 decals done by Sandman-Decals. Excellent reproductions. These are on the Panama Green HZ.

Nos DY6 decals, colours are exactly the same but the positioning of the plum and purple have been swapped around.

I have a list of all the HX paint colours and what decals were used on them except Bordeaux Blue. These are confirmed original decals seen on original cars and I have copies of most of the photos proving it. For example I have original photos of Papaya Sandmans with DY1, DY3 and DY4 decals on them.

Here is a Aquarius HX whit original DX5 decals on it. If you look at it you can see the plum, purple, blue layout. As the decal fade and wear the top layers of ink wear off leaving the bottom layers exposed. The first layer and outside colour of plum can clearly be seen.

I knew from personal experience the colours were different but just couldnt remember how. Back in 84 the panel beater repairing the damaged front gaurd on my Mint Julip HX van had three goes at getting the correct decal from Motorama Holden at Springwood. It was as confusing back then as it is now.

At one stage in 84 I owned a Barbados Green 202 4sp HQ Sandman van, a Mandarin Red 253 4sp HJ Sandman van and a Mint Julip 308 4sp HX Sandman van all at the same time until I sold the HQ to a mate who had just got his license. Ahh for the old days when vans were dirt cheap cause nobody wanted them any more.......

That DY6 repro is very poor. Incorrect font at the ends of the tailgate and also the colours are wrong. Digital Im guessing?

Ok so looks like I wont need to get hold of any NOS samples for the DX5 because I have samples for the DY6. At least I can offer both colour combos and know they will be 100% right.

With th4 faded DX5. That would make sense. Because the lighter colours are printed first. making the top layer the darker colour. Also the dark colours will tend to fade quicker than others. They will not fade for over 10years as long as they are screen printed done correctly using quality inks and vinyl.

Sean I would be very interested to get hold of the info you have on what colour suits what HX sandman. Is this something your willing to give out at this stage? Would make it much easier when people ask me what colour kit I will supply them to suit their colour HX.

Another interesting colour combo is the Yellow, Orange, Red. It seems HX used a lighter colour red than HZ.

Cheers
Jason

The HX DY3 with part number 9944059 was superceded in HZ by DY3 with part number 92003031..... probably due to the colour change as the DY1 and DY2 part numbers didnt change. DY3 was only used with Valencia orange in 77-78 and with Flamenco red in 79, will see if I have some HZ pics of those and compare.

Going out now but will get back to you later about the HX paint and decal combinations.

Thankyou that would be great!

Its interesting about the differences in colours. I wonder also how much they changed over time. How much the printers changed them without knowing. the first batch could be a shade or two different from the last batch in HZ.

How can that one be guaranteed to be sandman anyway? No GTS guards. Although GTS dash looks standard. Correct HX gauges and warning lights etc. Because of the not 100% id sandman would have to make it worth a little less. 3k seem pretty high?

As Byron said HX so no GTS guards. It also has Antelope metallic paint which is Sandman on a base model.

Byron, the non XX7 plated HQ vans with metallic paint you have recorded, are they early 74 build ie possibly early production Sandmans or are they spread out?

No they are spread out, but funny thing is they are mainly all Acacia Ridge. And all of them (including those from other plants) are very Sandman like ie V8, 4spd, buckets etc etc with the exception of one ute - a Monterey Green 6/74 HQ L31 M21 GV2 Belmont with a bench seat, and one van - an Aquamarine 5/74 L32 M15 with bench seat. Makes me wonder if Acacia forgot to stamp XX7 on many of them as Id swear they are mostly Sandmans (except for these two). Its quite clear in the HQ ordering procedure that metallic paint is not available on Belmont unless its an XX7, but as above a few have cropped up with bench seats and its not a typo as they have A suffix trim which is bench seat only.

Antelope was available on all base model HX as far as I knew, not just Sandman.

Not according to the "Effective from" July 76 Holden exterior colour card.

In HZ effective from November 78 base model vans and utes were only available in Flamenco Red, Jasmine Yellow, Mojave Beige and Palais White so if you have a 79 HZ base model van or ute in any other colour but these it is a Sandman.

You are right. Ill have to do some more research on this as it might be another useful pointer, but I have to get hold of all colour charts first. I do have the HZ one you refer to. Unfortunately though there will always be exceptions and special colours too like 0924. I really need to get copies of all revisions of the ordering procedures to see what was available.

I sent you an email Jason.

Here are some interesting interpretations of decals. The purple on the Absinth Yellow ute looks pretty cool though.
