After my van got resprayed late last year I got some Rarespares HQ-WB door rubbers amongst other things to finish the job off.
The only problem I see is that the little plastic clips come out of their holes too easily, and/or snap completely in 2 pieces.
(The plastic clips have replaced the original metal clips.)

Does anyone (including rarespares) have an alternative solution to the plastic clips as so far I have had both my drivers and passenger door rubber caught in the lock, and hence been chewed into 2 pieces!
It almost brought me to tears when this happened, mostly for the effort put in, but also for the cost as these door rubbers aren't cheap.

I am interested to hear other peoples opinions and stories on the door rubbers.

Yes unfortunately those white clips are not the best at all. When I did my door seals on my HQ I bought some other clips for it straight away.

You can get them if you contact Mike on (08) 9446 8788 the part number for the clips is A54.

They are a black clip, and more along the lines of a Xmas tree clip, they are much stronger the fins on the side done wear, and I havent had one snap yet.

These Holden seals were made by Bridgestone from antiquated and inefficient machinery up until about 1981 when Bridgestone up dated the manufacturing of these seals in consultation with GMH to the current method used in modern cars. Bridgestone ceased making these seals and Rare Spares took over the supply to GMH until GMH dropped the part, the tooling for the rubber and the clip is the same as supplied to GMH. I know nothing of this black clip that Dusty is talking about; I do know however that for the many thousands of clips we have sold we have had minimal breakages having said that we will get them tested for strength. As for size I have already had them checked and they appear ok, in some parts of the door there is a black female plug that the white one plugs into if these are missing then the clips will be loose.

Yep, lots of the white clips are broken on my LX Torry. I need to get some better clips soon. Could Torrynut or Dusty post a pic of the black x-mas tree clip?

On my car I fitted rubbers to my EH 15 years ago the clips have not broken at all. The rubbers I fitted to another EH 3 years ago, heaps of the plastic clips are breaking. I replaced the broken ones with some old ones I had that were at least 10 years old, and they did not break. All Rare Spares items. In my experience, the newer clips have failed.

I would like to give a definitive answer to this clip problem but unfortunately we have not been able to get to the bottom of it. We are still investigating the situation but I can say that the clips have been made by the same company for many years.

I fitted a full rubber set my EH ute after full colour change. The kit was bought in the early 90s. So far, probably 15 years of good service. Both door rubbers have been removed & refitted in that time I have yet to find any door rubber clip failure. I have spoken to many guys doing EH restos & they have the similair problems with the more recent door rubber clip breakage.

We have fitted quiet a number of door seals over this holiday period and have broken no clips. We did however break a clip once the seal was fitted because it was not pushed all the way home.

Can anyone with this clip problem tell me if the clips break whilst being fitted or once they are fitted?

Once they are fitted. There is lateral sideways force on the rubber when the door is closed, and it tends to snap the clips. Pushing them in is fine. It appears the actual material is a bit more brittle. I have 4 different samples of clips varying from current stock, 3 years old, 10+ years old and a couple of odd grey ones that appear to be from another source. I can help you out with these samples if you wish.
